The Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons are considering a Jaylen Brown trade that would involve Jalen Duren being the centerpiece of the deal on a sign-and-trade.

It would be a tricky deal.  The Pistons would only get to count half of Duren?s outgoing salary for matching purposes.  So even if he got a max 1st year salary of $41.25 million, they could only count $20.6 million as outgoing, requiring another $26 million.  Perhaps they could wrap it into the Stewart deal and use that $15 million, , but they are still an additional $11 million short.  That is what Ausar Thompson makes, but would they include him?  If not, is Ron Holland any good?  Is Duren overpaid at $41.25 million, meaning the Celtics would want to give him less and the Pistons would need to send even more salary?  And what if Duren doesn?t want to go to the Celtics?  It is difficult to get to $11+ million with their current salaries unless you want to take on bad or questionable salary like Duncan Robinson, Holland, or Marcus Sasser.

I guess Duren at max, or within a couple million of it, Holland, and Daniss Jenkins works.  I would not be a fan, even though I have graduated to the Trade Jaylen camp.  It is a lot of money for Duren, and I think would restrict the benefits of flexibility we might otherwise gain by trading Jaylen.  If it is Ausur Thompson instead of Holland, or Duren comes in at a lower price and we make up the cap difference with a small expiring, I guess I can be sold.

I imagine the discussions are mostly between the player's agent & BOS. Not BOS and DET.

Good position to take by DET. Use your leverage. Don't give in to the player. If the player truly wants that bigger contract, he can take the qualified offer and be an unrestricted FA in 12 months time. Get his deal then. Or DET can bully him into a lower deal now. Test of willpower for Duren.

I wonder if DET would do a sign and trade of Derrick White for Jalen Duren.

That would be easier to work financially given that only half of Duren's new salary will count for matching purposes as pointed out by Celtics2021 above.

D White by himself is unlikely to be enough given the age difference but D White + picks. Maybe. BOS gets a long term fixture at center. DET gets much need ball-handling, playmaking and shooting alongside Cade Cunningham.

Or maybe D White + Queta. DET gets their new starting center to replace Duren while addressing those needs for ball-handling, playmaking, shooting on the perimeter.

I had to edit this! I forgot Jaylen wasn't in the deal. I had no D White and no Jaylen. Man, that team was terrible.

So for bench options we have Hugo, J Walsh, Hauser. No backup big. No backup PG. 2 sizeable holes to fill. I'd say the backup PG is the bigger hole. The #1 priority.

That starting backcourt would be one of the weaker backcourts in the league. No depth behind it either. At least if you had a high level reserve it could punch up above it's weight. This would be the opposite. It would only get worse.

Hmm ... I'd rather keep D White & Queta.

I think he has a Dallas connection, so if there is a rumor that Dallas is attached to in some fashion, there might be more to read into it, but I do not see any sort of Dallas connection to this one.  The Celtics are not allowed to talk with Duren until June 30th, at most they could know what he told the Pistons, and presumably what the Pistons have found to be too much.

Daniss Jenkins helped carry me the last few weeks to my fantasy league basketball championship. We?d obviously need more than just him and Duren, but I wouldn?t mind Jenkins at all.

I like the Trey Murphy/Duren combo proposed by Boscel. That would be really solid tbh
