I'm wondering why nobody wants Jaylen.

I wrote this on the repeated tax thread

Quote
Jaylen Brown = 3yrs $180mil
LaMelo Ball = 3yrs $130mil

$50mil cheaper to have LaMelo at the 25% max contract versus Jaylen at the 30% supermax contract.

I think Jaylen's contract is lowering his trade desirability. A number of teams are scared off / unwilling to give up as much in a trade due to his contract. I don't think BOS has the offers some people are expecting.

I think this is playing a big role.

--------------

I forget who it was but someone was talking about only title contenders are willing to pay $60-70mil a year for Jaylen. The teams trying to make the playoffs want the cheaper stars at $40-50mil. They don't want to pay Jaylen all that money just make the playoffs. You pay that money because he gets you a ring.

Then a number of teams who in play for a Championship struggle with their own payroll and to have enough assets to make an attractive offer to Boston.

I've heard the Sengun trade idea, but what about Durant? Would Houston trade Durant and two 1st round picks for Brown? Houston has some enticing draft capital from prior trades. I know Durant is a shorter window, but the picks could help get someone else in a trade or be a possible future player in the draft.

I don't think its that nobody wants Jaylen. But for a Jaylen Brown trade to make sense for a team several things have to be true:

1) You have to have a financial structure that can absorb a 57-million-dollar contract. There are several teams that due to aprons and/or cheap owners simply cannot.

2) You have to be a team that can meet the Celtics probably very high asking price. there are several teams that I'm sure would love him but don't have 4 first rounders and/or interesting all-star potential young guys to trade.

3) You have to be good enough AFTER trading the stuff Boston would want to be competitive, because otherwise why are you trading for a soon to be 30-year-old max contract player.

Its not easy to meet all three requirements.

We're in the parity era where there cannot be Big 3's and having depth win you chips.

I think Brad should call NOP and ask for Murphy/Zion/3 picks lol he can even throw them Hauser and Baylor/Walsh

NOP isn't going to do that though. They were a bad team last year and swapping out your two best players for Brown means you are STILL a bad team.

Any team that acquires Brown has to keep enough on their roster to be good, otherwise what's the point?

Long post, could not read it all.  You left out the Clippers tho, who have a superstar at Jaylen?s position that might be on the trade market.

Added them in. Reporting has indicate that Kawhi would only be open to extensions with SAS or TOR, so there doesn't appear to be a path there. Not sure Boston would want him anyway with the Aspiration scandal still out there.
