I can't keep track of what the college rules are anymore.  It's the wild west right now.

I actually feel for the NCAA on this one.  They tried to cut down on the Wild West of waivers and exemptions and made a bright-line rule after the college seasons were over and players could move on with their lives.  And then the courts have come through and told them they must apply that rule retroactively, but maybe only to some players, and the Wild West has started up again.

And we were just digging out of the Covid eligibility mess too.

wouldn't be surprised if this ends up impacting how teams draft in the second round knowing they could be stuck offering a guaranteed contract or lose control over a draftee that can return to college instead.

This will probably be a one-year issue.  The rule was going to apply for all those currently in school.  It is the recent graduates who are affected.

Yeah, this is an example of the court sticking its nose where it has no business sticking it.  It's fair if the court enforces existing rules, but it really should stay out of decisions about what the rules *should* be (such as this or the Sorsby case).

Larry Bird went back and played in college after the Celtics drafted him back in the day.  I don't see this as a terrible thing if he wants to go back to college but the Celtics keep his draft rights.  They just sign him right after the college season is over.

He is probably going to play most of the season in Portland anyway, with the Celtics paying him, maybe even on a 2-way deal.  I can see how it would be better for him take the NIL money and play in College.
