The referee and VAR room was one-sided and like you said, the Egypt coach and coaching staff were trying to get the attention of the ref to look into certain things such as the "X" sign and potential fouls, and they ignored them. Then it escalated to the point where he gave them cards. It seems obvious to me and everyone that they are doing everything they can to make sure Argentina makes a deep run, it seems like everytime Argentina players raise their hands and ask for a penalty in the box, they 100% get the review. A lot of other teams can do this meanwhile and get told "no", no review. It's weird because like you said, Argentina's path so far hasn't been hard at all. But FIFA's president is also a noted Argentina fan so... (not made up, check social media and he even said it directly in an interview - he let it slip) Also, remember that whole Balogun red card fiasco and then it getting "pardoned". Well, Messi did practically the same thing in the Algeria game and guess what, not carded! Not even reviewed by VAR like Balogun's was. That's crazy, but you know, it's Messi and Argentina so... and in the Austria-Argentina game, Austria had a case and appealed for an Argentina penalty in the box and they didn't get a VAR review and were told "no". If Messi and Argentina appeals, they'll get it.
