What a terrible 3rd goal to concede ...

The 1st one was very poor too. Hard to win when you are making individual mistakes like this.

US will never be competitive bc they lack the instinct and IQ. Bunch of low IQ and low quality players

What is with our goalies playing so hesitant? Look at the other goalies in this tournament, aggressive to the ball, punching or catching it, willing to take contact. Meanwhile Freese and Turner in some of these games are just standing there while the ball is crossed or passed near post and just praying an attacker isn't there. Turkiye and now Belgium have taken advantage multiple times and it's been easy goals. Yes Ream and the defense have also sucked, but on that second goal the ball whizzed past Freese (not even high-speed) and he just let it go and the Belgium player tapped it in. JUST TAKE A STEP OUT AND CATCH IT DUDE.

And go figure, commits the worst defensive error in this tournament (even worse than Uruguay goalie) to give up the 3rd Belgium goal, and then I'm sorry but as amazing as Lukaku is as a scorer, that shot was not threatening and Freese still let it in easily. Jesus christ. Defense and goalkeeping needs to be addressed, the midfield and attack is promising though.

Ugly loss.

Ultimately, I think the US maxes out at around No. 15 or 16 in the world because there are so many popular sports here, which really limits the player pool for soccer, and that, in turn, limits the level of competition. With a generous amount of luck, the US could mayyyyyybe, one day, reach the WC quarterfinals, but I think that anything beyond that is a total pipe dream.

Ironically we used to have decent keepers, like Tim Howard...if we have someone of his quality it would feel much more stable at the back. But we just didn't play well...I think the moment got to them, they didn't play with the same verve and freedom that they did in the earlier rounds. Obviously the opponents were a step up from Paraguay, Australia, Turkiye and Bosnia. The Paraguay game was a bit of a red herring because they went out and attacked that game because they probably underestimated us and got punished so they reverted to the low block style they used in qualifying, if they played that way against us I still think we would have won but I doubt we would have scored 4 goals.

They just need more exposure to these moments.

The US is just not at the same level as the A group in skills and technical, but they could have at least played a smarter game. Cape Verde and Congo were both teams that were not as the same level in skills either, but they played a beautiful defensive game through hustle and grit behind unbelievable goalkeepers. The bottom line is, as limited as those teams were, they weren't making rookie mistakes and the USA completely wet the bed and gave up plays that you just can't do at this stage of the tournament.

Unfortunately the Trump saga also soils their achievements and completely put politics into sports - something that conservatives absolutely hate (if it's the wrong type of politics). I am not sure if the suspension was on their mind, but it definitely took the air out of the team as fan.

Where does the US go from here? Balogoun and Pulsic have another WC but they'll start to age and do we have emerging young stars that can take over?

Argentina has been surviving these last few rounds. That was an insane comeback

That disallowed goal for Egypt earlier ended up costing them too

They might make it to the final, but I think if they do, they?ll get found out against France or Spain or even Norway. I should follow Spain for blood reasons, but I kinda have Norway as my team right now. :D

It's funny that theoretically, Argentina has the easiest path going through Cabo Verde, Egypt, and now Switzerland (an decent team but Colombia would have been considered a stronger opponent). Their first real challenge would be England (or Norway but even they are not necessarily considered a top team) before the finals.

Do you think there is any validity to Egypt's claim of the unjust treatment of their team by referees? The Egypt goal was disallowed because of a foul many plays earlier - a bit unusual since it happened on the other side of the field. Then on Argentina's 3rd goal, a 'foul' could have been considered on Salah but referee official refused to check - to be fair, it looked like a weak foul but VAR could have been used to determine since they did the same with Argentina.

Also Brazilian media is saying that when the Egypt coach was doing the X, it was supposed to be a sign of racist abuse that officials should look into. Instead, he got a yellow card for it.

Yes, there absolutely is. The referee and VAR room was one-sided and like you said, the Egypt coach and coaching staff were trying to get the attention of the ref to look into certain things such as the "X" sign and potential fouls, and they ignored them. Then it escalated to the point where he gave them cards.

It seems obvious to me and everyone that they are doing everything they can to make sure Argentina makes a deep run, it seems like everytime Argentina players raise their hands and ask for a penalty in the box, they 100% get the review. A lot of other teams can do this meanwhile and get told "no", no review. It's weird because like you said, Argentina's path so far hasn't been hard at all. But FIFA's president is also a noted Argentina fan so... (not made up, check social media and he even said it directly in an interview - he let it slip)

Also, remember that whole Balogun red card fiasco and then it getting "pardoned". Well, Messi did practically the same thing in the Algeria game and guess what, not carded! Not even reviewed by VAR like Balogun's was. That's crazy, but you know, it's Messi and Argentina so... and in the Austria-Argentina game, Austria had a case and appealed for an Argentina penalty in the box and they didn't get a VAR review and were told "no". If Messi and Argentina appeals, they'll get it.
