It was interesting to see the cheering and support for the Iranian team yesterday. LA apparently has a very large population of Iranians, but it's interesting that many of them came fleeing the revolution so they are not necessarily the pro-government crowd. Pretty embarrassing that after the game, they couldn't stay and all had to leave to Mexico right away. Apparently players also complained for taking 5 hours to go through security prior to the game.

Yeah it's unfair. Blame the current administration for that.

Also, side note, if the U.S and Iran finish second in their groups and advance, they play each other in the Round of 32. That'd be funny lol

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

According to NBC "No World Cup host nation has ever been in an active military conflict with a country playing in the tournament" so its a strange situation.

They really should have just allowed Iran to play their group games all in Mexico.

What a pass from Rodrigo de Paul to Messi, blasted a precision ball past 5 defenders and gave Messi an open run at the Argentina backline and he unleased a rocket of a goal. 1-0 Argies

Most convenient politically, but I'm sure that would have been a nightmare especially having sold tickets to games and fans buying flights, booking accommodation, etc. Not just for the Iran games but the games that would have been displaced by having to move them. Imagine buying a ticket to attend a game in Mexico only to find out it's been moved to the US and you now have to apply for a visa to a country that's extremely reluctant to issue them right now.

Congo with their first ever World Cup goal!

I think performances from a lot of these smaller teams justifies the expansion to 48 teams. Gives more teams chances to showcase their talents and put them on the map too. Even Curacao, despite the 7-1 loss to a great Germany team still managed to score a goal against them and were 1-1 for a while before Germany unleashed. Now people know about Curacao as well. Obviously Cabo Verde made a name for themselves too big time.
