A big one ...

Quote
Michael Scotto: Sources: The Chicago Bulls and Norman Powell have agreed to a two-year, $45 million deal. Powell is coming off his first All-Star season and is a career 40% 3-point shooter

Chicago Bulls

G: Josh Giddey, Tre Jones, Rob Dillingham
G: Norm Powell
F: Matas Buzelis, I Okoro, Dailyn Swain, Noa Essengue
F: Caleb Wilson, Pat Williams, Jalen Smith
C: Nic Claxton, Zach Collins, Leonard Miller

That team should be able to play .500 ball.

That?s a big loss on Miami. I wonder why Norm left for Chicago. Couldn?t the Heat give him the same amount of money?

Dare I say the Bulls might have a competent front office now?

They were hardcapped at the 1st apron because they took Portis in with their TPE. They only had around $12-13M to spend on a big FA and around half of that already went to Hardaway.

I don't think Powell was all in on Miami anyway. He made the all-star team and then was basically a part time player later in the season. Getting that contract from the Bulls was huge for him. That's also a big loss for Miami, but we've known it was coming.

Odd contract details for John Collins

Quote
KeithSmithNBA‬: The reported contract for John Collins with the Pistons is for more than the Non-Taxpayer MLE. That signals this is either Detroit using cap space or working out a sign-and-trade with the Clippers.

Why pay him slightly more MLE? Barely above the MLE. Just give him the MLE.

Quote
Omari Sankofa II‬: Per source, last two years of John Collins' contract are non-guaranteed. Don't have the exact figures yet, but only first year is fully-guaranteed. Similar structure as Duncan Robinson's deal last season. Creating cap space would mean the Pistons have to waive Robinson. There's more to map out, but I do think they have a path to sign Collins while also keeping Robinson. We'll see how it plays out

Especially with this info. With so little money guaranteed, surely that small bit above the MLE vs MLE is not important.

Anyway, this looks like a rental. A 1yr rental. Then trade him in 12 months time with that non-guaranteed deal. Look for someone who is a better individual player / better fit for their team than John Collins is. Just a temporary stop-gap solution.

The emphasis should be on the word reported.  Collins could have a 10% trade kicker that would increase the value.  Those are sometimes reported to make agents look good, as it makes the value of the deal look bigger.

Alternatively they could be letting Tobias Harris walk.  They have the cap space, and Collins and Harris play the same spot.

Miami Heat

G: Davion Mitchell, (FA)
G: Tim Hardaway Jr, Dru Smith
F: Andrew Wiggins, P Larsson, S Fontecchio
F: Giannis, Portis, N Jovic
C: Bam, (Giannis)

Worst backcourt in the league?

Brooklyn have a dodgy backcourt as well. Egor Demin, Mikel Brown Jr, Keon Ellis, Nolan Traore. They are one of the worst teams in the league though. Miami are a playoff team.

Memphis with Scottie Pippen Jr and Cedric Coward is probably the next worst. Coward is a better player than Tim Hardaway. S Pippen Jr is equivalent to Davion Mitchell. Memphis have strong bench guards (Ty Jerome, KCP) unlike Miami as well.

So the 2nd worst backcourt in basketball?

This is why it made no sense why some media pundits were tabbing them as one of the favorites in the East.  No depth and horrible backcourt.

This is a 6 seed or play-in team.  If injuries hit Giannis or Bam, they're screwed.

I know Tobias Harris has become a bit of a meme (Jayson Tatum is the Michael Jordan of Tobias Harrises comes to mind), but he is significantly better than John Collins imo. Dude has had a pretty rock solid career as a do-it-all big wing. The idea of Collins has always seemed better than the actual product. I think Detroit will regret losing Harris if they are indeed choosing to let him go.

Free agent center Nikola Vucevic has agreed on a one-year, $3.9 million deal to return to the Orlando Magic, sources tell ESPN. Vucevic -- who started his career in Orlando as a sophomore, spent nearly nine years with the Magic and has maintained a home there since -- turned down?

Great news. They can trade Goga Bitadze now!

Brad - get on the phone. Try to trade Hauser for him.

I love Orlando's depth at PF and C but I hate their perimeter bench players.

G: Suggs, Jevon Carter, Jase Richardson
G: D Bane, A Black
F: F Wagner, Jett Howard
F: Banchero, Tristan da Silva, Noah Penda
C: W Carter Jr, Vucevic, Bitadze

Jase Richardson is their perimeter player off their bench that I like. He still hasn't established himself in the NBA but at least he looks like he can be a two-way player. A Black can't shoot on a team that already has a lack of shooting. Jett Howard has done nothing to show he is an NBA quality player.

A Black would be awesome if he could shoot. He does everything else well. He just can't shoot. And with Suggs, F Wagner, Banchero ... the other perimeter guys need to be able to shoot.

Hauser for Goga Bitadze would be great for them because Hauser would give them a shooter at SF/SG.

Wendell Carter Jr. should be the aim.  They are way over the first apron and on pace to each the second apron.  Hauser for Bitadze adds $3 million.  That deal cannot happen unless they move off another $15 million in salary.  Carter Jr. for Hauser saves them $7.5 million, which is the direction they need to go.

Free agent Moe Wagner has agreed to a two-year, $19 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets, sources tell ESPN. The deal contains a mutual option guaranteeing the $19M while allowing either side to opt-in (not opt-out) along with having a conversation about doing a new contract next summer.

Shams Charania: Free agent center Ariel Hukporti has agreed to a one-year, $3.4 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, sources tell ESPN. Hukporti departs the Knicks after playing a reserve role on their title team, and gives the 76ers frontcourt depth and a high-motor, athletic big man.

A loss for the Knicks. It was assumed Hukporti would be the replacement at backup center for M Robinson if M Robinson leaves in FA as he is expected to.

Edit: Wait, that is Philly. Hukporti is their new backup center. They have Adem Bona as well. This must mean they are moving on from Drummond. I like Drummond for BOS as a cheap bench center.

Michael Scotto: The Sacramento Kings and Jonathan Mogbo have agreed to a two-way deal, league sources told @hoopshype. Mogbo was the 31st pick of the 2024 NBA Draft and spent the past two seasons with the Toronto Raptors.

It feels like the Nets put a bunch of random transaction ideas on a bulletin board, and then just threw darts at it.

Very cool for Nikola Vucevic to go back to the Magic. He told me three years ago he wanted his family to live in Orlando upon retirement. And we know the Magic are expecting Moritz Wagner to depart the franchise this week, likely to Brooklyn.

That is nice. I am happy for Vooch.
