Detroit will likely acquire Joe into the Isaiah Stewart $15M trade exception or signing exception.

Pistons are operating as an over the cap team because of the Jalen Duren FA cap hold.

That is interesting. So they won't have the cap space to sign Norm Powell? Or at least are limited to the MLE?

Kind of, but they can release Duncan Robinson, who only has $2 million guaranteed, to make an offer to Powell in the low-$20s in year one using cap space, while keeping Duren?s cap hold.  They just have to decide by July 6th or whenever everything has to become official.

Ah okay. That should be enough to land Norm Powell. They are in good shape then.

They would likely lose Tobias Harris in this scenario, unless he signs for $9.4 million or less (which maybe is fair, I do not know what his market will be).  But they would have to give up his Bird rights to clear his cap hold for Powell.

Ahh, so that does leave them in bind.

I'd expect T Harris to get the MLE. If they lose T Harris, he is the only big forward on their roster. They have none off the bench. Ausar would the best option to slide over to PF. T Harris is also their only skilled forward. Ausar and Ron Holland do not have jump-shots. They cannot space the floor. DET's offense would decline considerably without T Harris.

DET are better with T Harris at PF and whatever shooter they can plug in at SG (currently Duncan Robinson) ... than signing Norm Powell and having a bunch of forwards with no offensive skill.

------------

Actually ... I wonder ... in that scenario, Cade Cunningham is their 2nd biggest perimeter player behind Ausar. So do you move Cade to SF defensively? Cade would be their 2nd best option at PF behind Ausar Thompson so he would probably have to spend some time there too.

G: Daniss Jenkins, Marcus Sasser, Ebuka Okorie
G: Norm Powell, Isaiah Joe
F: Cade Cunningham, Caris LeVert
F: Ausar Thompson, Ron Holland
C: Jalen Duren, Paul Reed

Go from a big team (especially on the perimeter) to a very small team 1-4. Similar to what Minnesota may do after trading away Randle & Naz Reid.

That would give Cade multiple shooters / ball-handlers. Open the offense more. It is still not right. I don't think it is enough (added) offense for the decline in defense & rebounding.

Don?t forget they now have Isaiah Joe, who they could put at the wing and who is a lights out shooter.  And they would have that $9.4 million exception to bolster their bench, along with Jenkins, Levert, and Reed for the 9-man healthy rotation.
