How about the J's take less $ like Brunson did?

Brunson was given the largest extension he was eligible for.
What he gave up: If Brunson had waited until 2025 to negotiate in free agency, he could have signed a five-year deal worth $269 million.

What he took: He accepted a 4-year, $156.5 million extension to ensure long-term stability and lock himself in early.

This gave the Knicks the cap flexibility required to build an elite roster

Fine, but you cannot negotiate contracts after you sign them to take less money, and Tatum and Brown both signed extensions, not waiting for free agency, same as Brunson.

Kessler is going to be a real test of the new market.  Before these more severe tax and apron penalties, yes, someone would have figured out a way to over pay him and then either UTA would match or they wouldn't.  I think UTA is playing this right.  It is to be seen if someone is able to offer Kessler that much.  Plenty of teams can offer the full MLE, but how many teams can realistically offer more?  And even if Kessler gets a high offer, UTA can match or work a S&T to get something out of it.

If players are offended by teams taking this approach, they better get used to it.

I agree with that. But with all th apron penalties now, players might need to sign for just a little less or the NBA needs to raise the salary cap a bit more.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, the Spurs have the financial flexibility to be active in free agency and could target a stretch forward capable of complementing Wembanyama.

"The Spurs have the flexibility to go out and do some free-agency shopping," Marks said during ESPN's NBA Today. "When you look at the playoffs, they need a combo big man who can complement Victor [Wembanyama].

When you look at a stretch 4, a player like Rui Hachimura from the Lakers, you pair him up with a big who can shoot. Regardless, the Spurs are set up really nicely for the future."

Hachimura would be awesome on the Spurs.

I think he is looking for around $20mil per annum.

The Celtics are willing to trade anyone on their roster not named Jayson Tatum to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, per @KevinOConnor (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the?).

Boston is aggressively making calls in the marketplace to form a competitive package to the Bucks for Giannis.

"The Celtics are willing to trade anyone on their roster not named Jayson Tatum to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo,"
Me: That's interesting.
"Per Kevin O'Connor."
Me: Never mind.

The Celtics should be interested, but the nature of this reporting makes me feel like this is Boston being used to drive up the price on Miami (maybe even Boston helping to do so).
Miami has basically offered everything of value it has e kept for Bam.  They can't pay more than they have offered, which simply isn't enough for milwaukee or the trade would have been done already.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Herro has been rumored in trades for like 3 years now and it seems no one wants him. Jrue, Lillard, etc. it seems the other teams just don't want Herro and they end up trading with other teams not Miami.

I doubt MIL wants Herro, so they'll try to redirect him to a third team. Although, if you're MIL, you're fine trading Giannis for basically Ware, Jacquez, Jovic and maybe 2-3 FRPs? It's not terrible but feels very meh. And keep in mind, the third team in the trade who acquires Herro probably still isn't giving up a tremendous amount either for him, maybe a future FRP or multiple 2nds and a player?

Here's an interesting thing as a bit of a social media guy myself. My Grizzlies friend told me yesterday Herro's brother replied to a random IG comment asking him (Tyler Herro) to "come to Orlando" with a GIF of a Grizzly bear. AKA, Memphis Grizzlies? Maybe it's a MIA-MIL-MEM 3-team deal with Giannis to Miami and Herro goes to Memphis? How do we think that framework looks like.

Herro would be interesting for Orlando.

Say Jalen Suggs & a 1st round pick ... although maybe ORL have no 1st rounders left after the D Bane trade. I do not know.

G: T Herro
G: D Bane
F: F Wagner
F: Banchero
C: W Carter Jr

That is an interesting team.

The overwhelming belief around the NBA is that Giannis Antetokounmpo is heading to the Miami Heat, per @BrettSiegelNBA

If MEM is involved as a 3rd team with MIA and MIL, my guess is it involves Morant.  Maybe MIL is willing to take a chance with Morant.

Ooooh very interesting. Yeah that could be it. I'm sure MEM would get back an additional pick or player besides just Herro but that could make sense. I think Herro would be a good fit for MEM

The Utah Jazz are "genuinely torn" between selecting AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer or Darryn Peterson one week away from the NBA Draft, league sources told The Athletic.

New York Times

Quote
The irony of Peterson's camp revealing his preference for the Wizards is that Utah is the cleanest fit for him of the three teams at the top of the draft.

The Jazz see him as a shooting guard who can play point guard. Behind the scenes, there is some concern on Peterson's side that he and Jazz point guard Keyonte George share the same agency. But the Jazz firmly believe the two can play together. The teams advancing deep into the playoffs enforced that belief by simultaneously playing multiple ball handlers.

I think Keyonte George needs a guard next to him who can handle the ball and act as a 2nd playmaker. Give Utah two controllers on the perimeter. Keyonte will need all the help he can get because none of that frontcourt are passers (JJJ, Kessler, Markkanen, Ace Bailey).

Quote
Dybantsa, at 6-foot-9, is maybe the most physically imposing of the three, relative to his position. The former BYU star is capable of playing both wing positions, and he?s the giant shooting guard/small forward that almost every team covets.

It sounds like Utah is planning on starting Dybantsa at SG alongside Keyonte George in order to play Markkanen & JJJ at forward. Kessler at center.

I don't like that for Dybantsa. It reminds me of Seattle playing Durant at SG for his rookie season. He did much better once he was allowed to play his natural position at SF.

Quote
That Boozer is firmly in the mix at No. 2 is a testament to how much the Jazz like him, being that he isn?t a clean positional fit. The Jazz already have Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen at his position, but Boozer is so talented that it may not matter for the Jazz. They may take him and worry about fit after.

Heat Central: Marc Spears doesn't see the Clippers getting involved in a 3 team deal acquiring Jaylen Brown to get Giannis to Boston:

"They've been talking about a 3 way deal where Jaylen Brown would be going from the Celtics, to the Clippers, and Giannis would be going to Boston. From what I'm hearing Boston would certainly love to have Giannis but respectfully I don't know if the Clippers feel the same about Jaylen and I don't think from what I've been told have been any conversations there.

One thing about the Clippers, they're enjoying this youth movement"

x.com

Interesting input from Marc Spears - a much trusted reporter.

It did sound like LAC was planning on a post-Kawhi life at the end of this season. Not immediately. But in the near future. That they are looking to shift to a quick rebuild. Through developing some youth and maximizing cap space to pursue FAs.

"What I have heard from teams around the league is, it?s more speculation.

I think the Boston Celtics would tell you that they love Jaylen Brown ... All this is, is leverage though. All this is, a moment of maximum leverage"
