What he gave up: If Brunson had waited until 2025 to negotiate in free agency, he could have signed a five-year deal worth $269 million.

What he took: He accepted a 4-year, $156.5 million extension to ensure long-term stability and lock himself in early.

This gave the Knicks the cap flexibility required to build an elite roster

Fine, but you cannot negotiate contracts after you sign them to take less money, and Tatum and Brown both signed extensions, not waiting for free agency, same as Brunson.

Kessler is going to be a real test of the new market.  Before these more severe tax and apron penalties, yes, someone would have figured out a way to over pay him and then either UTA would match or they wouldn't.  I think UTA is playing this right.  It is to be seen if someone is able to offer Kessler that much.  Plenty of teams can offer the full MLE, but how many teams can realistically offer more?  And even if Kessler gets a high offer, UTA can match or work a S&T to get something out of it.

If players are offended by teams taking this approach, they better get used to it.

I agree with that. But with all th apron penalties now, players might need to sign for just a little less or the NBA needs to raise the salary cap a bit more.

According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, the Spurs have the financial flexibility to be active in free agency and could target a stretch forward capable of complementing Wembanyama.

"The Spurs have the flexibility to go out and do some free-agency shopping," Marks said during ESPN's NBA Today. "When you look at the playoffs, they need a combo big man who can complement Victor [Wembanyama].

When you look at a stretch 4, a player like Rui Hachimura from the Lakers, you pair him up with a big who can shoot. Regardless, the Spurs are set up really nicely for the future."

Hachimura would be awesome on the Spurs.

The Celtics are willing to trade anyone on their roster not named Jayson Tatum to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, per @KevinOConnor (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the?).

Boston is aggressively making calls in the marketplace to form a competitive package to the Bucks for Giannis.

The Celtics should be interested, but the nature of this reporting makes me feel like this is Boston being used to drive up the price on Miami (maybe even Boston helping to do so).

Miami has basically offered everything of value it has e kept for Bam.  They can't pay more than they have offered, which simply isn't enough for milwaukee or the trade would have been done already.

Herro has been rumored in trades for like 3 years now and it seems no one wants him. Jrue, Lillard, etc. it seems the other teams just don't want Herro and they end up trading with other teams not Miami.

I doubt MIL wants Herro, so they'll try to redirect him to a third team. Although, if you're MIL, you're fine trading Giannis for basically Ware, Jacquez, Jovic and maybe 2-3 FRPs? It's not terrible but feels very meh. And keep in mind, the third team in the trade who acquires Herro probably still isn't giving up a tremendous amount either for him, maybe a future FRP or multiple 2nds and a player?

Here's an interesting thing as a bit of a social media guy myself. My Grizzlies friend told me yesterday Herro's brother replied to a random IG comment asking him (Tyler Herro) to "come to Orlando" with a GIF of a Grizzly bear. AKA, Memphis Grizzlies? Maybe it's a MIA-MIL-MEM 3-team deal with Giannis to Miami and Herro goes to Memphis? How do we think that framework looks like.

Herro would be interesting for Orlando.

Ooooh very interesting. Yeah that could be it. I'm sure MEM would get back an additional pick or player besides just Herro but that could make sense. I think Herro would be a good fit for MEM
