  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Not that surprising, and it was close with Cade, but those exceptions with Cade and Luka got them in. Still a great season by JB!

Hear that GMs? Jaylen Brown: 6th best player in the world

Also thought Luka and Cade required exceptions?

agreed - definitely over Luka.  JB plays defense and didn't have Lebron and Reaves as second and third bananas.  Also didn't have a good season from White to be a quality second banana behind him.

I think the argument for Brown over Luka would be based on games played, but the NBA kind of took that off the table.  In the games that Luka played, he is a better player than Brown.  More points per game, rebounds, assists, 2P%, and 3P%.  I get that defense does matter but Luka can (and did at times) carry a team in a way that Brown can't.  I think Brown and Cade Cunningham are closer.  Both had great seasons, break out seasons of sorts.  That one is a fair debate, could reasonably argue either way on that one.

As to Luka vs. Brown, I would be all for looking at total points, total rebounds, and so on vs per game stats, which would favor the player who played more games (or minutes).  But even with that, Luka had more total points, total rebounds, and total assists, even though Luka played 154 fewer total minutes and 7 fewer games.

I had him second but admit it was close. Based on competition at his position and the fact that he is the second guy on the team, I think he?ll have a hard time getting on future All-NBA teams. he?s a good defensive player, but I don?t think he?s good enough for all defense. He?ll need a couple more All-Star games to lock in his spot in the Hall of Fame.

What are the things he ha done that are controversial?

I can only think of his whining "woe is me" nonsense.

He isn?t really controversial, but any annoyance that he has brought with some of his comments is countered by an outstanding work ethic and a commitment to be the best player he can be. I hope he gets the recognition every Celtic great has received. He?s a possible hall of famer and he is a definite to have his number in the rafters, even if he doesn?t play another minute in green.  He probably has issues with narcissism, that or paranoia, but all in all I think he?s been a great Celtic. The Jays are an all-time great Celtic duo.

I worry that he's buying his own victimhood.

Like, in the playoffs he kept committing offensive fouls because he thought he was "wronged", rather than adjusting and helping us win games.

That worries me too. There is definitely something in him that's a little troubling - but 10 years in I think he's been pretty stable overall.  His meltdown recently (when/where was that?) was disconcerting - needed multiple teammates to calm him down.  But that's the exception not the rule.  I just think if he were really struggling with mental health that he'd have had bigger or more consistent problems than what he's shown.  Yes, he is convinced he gets mistreated and yes he thinks he is the best 2-way player on the planet (he accepts Wemby's superiority because he isn't human), and yes he believes he can outduel Stephen A. Smith in a debate.  He is not short on confidence - but it does seem to seep into sounding narcissistic, I am the center of the universe, thinking.

He thrives on being a victim.

No awards ? How about Finals MVP and now All-NBA plus the All-Star team.

The smart players work out what kind of motivation they need to get the best out of themselves. But they control it, they don't let it control them. Let's hope Jaylen can use the chip on his shoulder to continue to excel, without it consuming him.
