Seeing some other comparisons for Caleb Wilson

* A UNC fan compared him to Antawn Jamison. Not in terms of skill-set but in terms of overall quality. That Caleb Wilson will have career similar to Jamison. A few All-Star appearances. Not a franchise player. More of a sidekick star. Jamison being a former UNC star himself. Presumably what brought about the name mention.

* Shawn Kemp is a name I am seeing often. The main reason for this is shared love of dunking. Attacking the rim every chance they can get.

* Antonio McDyess. Similar reason as the Kemp one. Did not reach the same heights as Kemp. Lower level version of Kemp.

I find the Kemp and McDyess ones harder to see because Caleb Wilson is so thin. He will add weight but he looks more like a combo forward to me than a true PF ... which is fine because true PFs don't really exist anymore in the NBA. It is almost all combo forwards and SFs pretending to be PFs. In that light, I do like the Jamison comp a bit more.

----------------

I was thinking closer to James Worthy when I was watching C Wilson's highlights. Not as fluid an athlete as Worthy. Not as quick. A slower version of Worthy.

Which brought to mind Jeff Green and Marvin Williams. Jeff Green because all the Worthy comparisons Tommy Heinsohn used to make about their similar long strides and finishes on drives going to the basket. Marvin as a fellow "KG lite" and UNC alumni. As was Worthy.

Point being - I don't think PF. I think combo forward. So I go away from the Kemp / Dice comps.

How about Jabari Smith Jr?

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

How about Jabari Smith Jr?

Their offensive skill-sets are quite different. Jabari was a shooter in college and in the pros. He took almost 50% of his shots from 3 and hit 42% of them. Caleb Wilson is an interior scorer with some midrange game.

I always think of Rashard Lewis when I think of Jabari. I am thinking more of a slasher type for Caleb Wilson.

Caleb Wilson is going to be special.  I think he and Dybantsa will be the two best players in this class when it's all said and done.

I am watching some different highlight reels of Caleb Wilson. I can see more of the Antawn Jamison comp in this one. The way Wilson uses his quickness to beat guys in the post. Similar to a young Antawn Jamison at UNC and when he first arrived in the NBA.

Some guys beat you with power. Some guys beat you over the top with height / length. Jamison beat you with quickness in the post. Beat you to spots. Quick release on his shots. Caleb beats guys with quickness in the post. He relies more on leaping ability than a quick shot release. But it is the quickness that creates the initial advantage. Good spin moves. Good first step. Similar to a young Antawn Jamison.

The two things that are markedly different from Jamison are (1) dunking. Wilson attacks the rim hard with everything. Great vertical threat. Quick leaper. High leaper. Explosive leaper. That reminds me of John Collins (2) More defensive activity. Jamison was always a good offensive player in the NBA but he struggled defensively. He wasn't quick enough to cover SFs and wasn't physical enough to defend PFs. A liability at both spots. Wilson will be a plus defender.

Appreciate the responses everyone. I am there with most of you that you take Boozer over Wilson but I think it?s more becuase of how good Boozer would be for proving stability to a Memphis franchise that has lacked it.

I think Wilson is awesome, he?s my favorite prospect in the draft. A walking 20/10 and has that rare gift of being extremely competitive and universally respected by his teammates. All that being said Boozer is too big to fail. There is just no scenario where Cam Boozer isn?t a cornerstone type of player. Maybe not your best player, but is the steady hand that steers the ship to use some cliches. If Memphis actually has something with Cedric Coward and Boozer can solidify the frontcourt with Edey that?s years of prosperity. That?s simply too much to pass up for the chance at something higher with Wilson.

There are bits of Caleb Wilson that remind me of another "KG lite" prospect = Darius Miles.

It is mostly the dunking but also the hustle plays on defense to create steals & blocks and the rebounding too. Some similarities in the driving but Miles was quicker / more explosive. The way they both go coast to coast. Again, Miles was quicker. Wilson a much more assertive mentality. Miles more passive.

I have always wonder how dominant / how much of a scorer D Miles would have been if he went to college instead of directly to the NBA. Good chance he would have been a prolific scorer in college.
