SMH they traded Connelly Early for... Curtis Mead

What is in the waters of Boston.... first the Celtics (Jaylen) now this? 

I don?t love the trade, but at least Mead is young (25) and is hitting for power. Currently has 17hrs, which puts him second behind Contreras.

As a comparison, Abreu has 337 at bats and 15Hrs. Mead has 17Hrs in only 284 at bats.

I'm very underwhelmed. If they were gonna trade Early, I would hope it'd be in a package for someone like Langeliers. But Curtis Mead?? He's been traded four times in his career and was also DFA'd earlier this season. Risky. And not a big name.

Early may be a bit of fools gold tho.  His FIP (fielder-independent pitching) is 73rd out of 92 pitchers who have pitched at least 90 innings this year.  And he has been out with an arm injury.  To me this trade is two teams selling high on a guy, and hoping that if anyone turns into a pumpkin it is the one they traded away and not the one they received.

I agree that it?s a gamble for both sides. I like Early, but if we are looking ahead he is likely out of a playoff rotation. Mead addresses a bigger need.

I had never heard of Mead until today.  This tells me there is concern with Early and his elbow and confidence in Bennett and Tolle. Adding an 0.852 OPS to the line up is good.  I have no problem with the principal behind the trade, surplus pitching for needed hitting.  It all will depend on how good the players turn out to be.  I have no idea how good Mead is. Early is probably good, maybe not great.

I think it's about balancing the roster better. Early projects to be a #4 starter most likely. He's also currently injured and had started giving up homers in many of his recent starts.

Crochet, Suarez, Tolle, and Bennett are all LHP starters the team regarded more favorably. Gray is their best starter. Sandoval is healthy finally (worse than Early but can eat some innings). Bello can eat innings too, even if he's going through it mentally and needs an opener. They also have Eyanson and Witherspoon as prospects with higher ceilings.

Seems they view starting pitching as an area of depth and wanted to add hitting (a place of need) to better balance the roster.

This is before you consider the organization's pitching development abilities.

I hope I am wrong, but the Red Sox trading a nice young, under control lefty with a career 3.44 ERA in 120 innings, for a guy who was DFA'd by the White Sox last year and is now on his 4th team at age 25, seems like a horrible trade. He has played well for the Nats, but this is such a small window of good performance by him, I think the Sox will regret this.

I think you could use that same logic (limited sample size) to describe Early. And if I'm not mistaken, Mead was regarded as a top prospect while coming up. So I think he has some natural tools.

I don't have the baseball chops to project what type of player he will be. But he is a middle infielder who doesn't strike out a lot and can hit for power. Those seem a lot harder to come by for the Red Sox than quality starting pitchers. So I'm hopeful.
