2026 Red Sox/MLB Season Thread

Brewer fan here wanting to thank the Sox for gifting us a game we had no business winning.  we're going to appreciate this in late September

I think today is the Sox' day.  Brewer offense is anemic but they've been getting by so far with smoke and mirrors so far.  Crochet will likely shut down the Brewers (team is racking up double digit strikeout games a lot) and Miz is only good for 4-5 innings unfortunately.  The Brewer bullpen is still working out the kinks evidently.

Prediction Sox 5 - Brewers 2 today.

Tomorrow's a different story.  Brewers will be able to score against Gray and Patrick should be able to keep Boston fairly quiet at the plate.

This is crazy... According to Baseball Reference, the Red Sox still have the second highest chance of making the playoffs (64.1%) among AL East teams despite the 2-8 start of the season.  The Skankees are number 1 (88.9%), for now.

The AL in general is just putrid. The Sox are still technically just 3 games back of a wild card spot and more than half that league is 5-5 or worse lol. Only the Yankees and Guardians have looked great. Astros did too but they've lost 2 in a row and are now 6-5, closer to the middle class.

Konnor Griffin, the top prospect in baseball, made his MLB debut last week for Pirates at just 19 years old.  He just signed a 9 year, 140 million extension with Pittsburgh.  He will have no arbitration at all as the contract takes him into free agency, which he will enter at age 28/29 and presumably in the prime of his career.  I wonder if that sort of contract will become more common as he is now the third such extension after Colt Emerson's 8 year, 95 million and Cooper Pratt's 8 year, 50.75 million. The latter 2 are still in the minors.

The latter 2 are still in the minors.

It's a little different, but last year Roman Anthony at age 20 and in his rookie season also signed a 8/130M contract. I do think we will see more of these kind of deals going forward, as the Braves tend to do it often. To a lesser extent, the Red Sox also made these kind of moves for Bello, Rafaela and Campbell on the cheaper side (50-60M over 7+ years). Unfortunately Campbell might be a bust though and they probably rushed that, but you could see the vision. 8/60M still isn't atrocious long term.

It's a gamble, but I think a good one in most cases for the organization.

This trend is interesting.  It is a gamble to sign a 30 year old to a 10-year contract and also a gamble to sign a 20 year old before you really know for sure if they are going to be good.  You look at a deal like the one Pujols signed and the last 4 or 5 years it was just dead salary weight on the team.  This is what teams are trying to avoid.  In one case, it is a $130M risk, in the other, it could be as much as a $400M risk.

In the Sox case, they may end up with 3 deals (Campbell, Anthony, Mayer) for what it would cost to sign one 30 year old slugger.  They won't all work out, but fewer eggs in one basket.

Red Sox now middle of the AL pack for Runs Scored at 62 (15 games).  SEA has 63 in 16 games so they should pass them.  And the pitching has been better.  They have a ways to go still to dig out of the hole they got themselves into.

But I am wondering about the batting order.  Having Anthony lead off does not make sense and does not seem to be working well.  I heard this idea on the radio so it is not an original thought, but I thought is was a good idea.  The idea was for the following batting order:

Duran
Rafeala
Anthony
Contreras
Abreu
Story
Mayer
Durbin
Narvaez

This keeps the Rigt-Left alternation they seem to like.  The issue is probably having Rafaela batting 2nd but with Anthony 3rd and Contreras 4th, that would offer some protection to Anthony and maybe he would see some better pitches.  With Story or Durbin batting 2nd, why would the other team give Anthony anything to hit?

Crochet had an absolutely awful outing and his velocity was down to 92 MPH when taken out of the game.

Not a good sign at all. Wouldn't be surprised to see him go to the IL -- hopefully not though.
