Gonzo isn?t a free agent, so the Patriots would have to trade him like the cowboys did with Parsons.

Zero percent chance he hits free agency.

Yup. Gonzo has the same agent as Witherspoon, so he was always gonna separate out the deals to make sure that both reset the market. Witherspoon was first, but that doesn't mean Gonzo isn't gonna get his big extension. It kind of sucks to be second and have to wait longer/pay more... but it's because Gonzo is just that good

Christian Gonzalez is under contract for 2026 for $2.3M and then there is a team option for 2027 at $18M that was "exercised" in April.  Then I believe they could franchise him for up to 3 seasons if they want.  I doubt it goes this way but that is 5 more seasons under club control.

If they can't get something settled in the next week or so, he will probably be traded.  I am hopeful they are close, but who knows.  I am sure the guaranteed money is the issue.  Gonzalez has had injury/durability issues.  It is a tough call.  It is easy to say just pay the guy.  He is a really good player who "impacts winning".  But you lose optionality if you shell out a big contract and he gets injured or routinely misses games.  14 games last season plus (4) playoff games is encouraging, but this is still a concern with him.

And do you also proclaim that there is zero chance that he holds out without an extension?  I feel there is some chance that one (he is traded) or the other (he holds out) or both happen.  Most likely they get something done, that seems like a win win for both parties, but if not, then all bets are off and who knows how this goes.

I would absolutely say there's 0 chance he holds out this year. Next year, definitely not 0, but I would never trade him a year early out of that fear.

I'd say it's more likely he gets held out with an injury than that he holds out for an extension (that's mostly because I expect a deal to be reached before the deadline next year, though)

The Houston Texans have agreed to trade for wide receiver Kayshon Boutte from the New England Patriots, sources confirmed to ESPN on Monday.

Houston is sending safety Jaylen Reed, who played in seven games as a sixth-round rookie in 2025, and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick to the Patriots in exchange for Boutte.

Boutte would have had a great year in NE this year. Really too bad. I hated losing Meyers and I hate losing Boutte. Guys who found ways to make plays.

It's pretty jarring to me that they haven't really addressed the pass rush and linebacker situation this offseason and frankly, that's what worries me the most going into the season even more than the Gonzalez situation and other things. They seem to be really hoping Jacas can deliver, which is a huge risk for any rookie and given his circumstances. What happens if Spillane goes down? Is Landry even 100% yet?

If they just let the opposing QB have all day to throw with the only threat of pressure coming off blitzes, that's not ideal. They kind of got away with it last year because of the easy schedule and bad QBs they faced, but this year will be different. And we've seen in the preseason and even some joint practices they are getting run down their throats. Not ideal.

I think the overall team is better and the offense + O-Line are too, but there's a chance the defense regresses both to the mean, and also because of this tough schedule where they face a ton of elite QBs this season. It might be a situation where they are asking Maye and the offense to score 30+ most games to win.
