Wow, they did it!

Look for Shulga to be signed, the roster to be at 13 for a bit, and the Celtics to add random rookies for the rest of the year to stay under the tax.  I think they might have enough space with that strategy to sign Harper Jr. on the last day of the season so he is playoff eligible, but it will be very close.

Here's the very quick analysis I'd done in the Celtics news thread:

Spotrac has us as $1,704,383 over, and we still need to sign one guy within 2 weeks.

So, breaking this down, *if* we had dumped Tillman, we would be $842,292 under.  But, we would have needed to sign a rookie at $490,128 immediately.

That would have left us at $352,164 in cap space, with a need to sign one more player.  I'm not sure if it's technically allowable to sign a 14th man in two weeks, keep him for 10 days, waive him, sign another 10-day contract in two weeks, etc.  If so, we might have been able to get under the tax.

The other option would have been to get under via Derrick White missing his likely bonuses.  I don't know what they all are, but even if he'd missed $150k in bonuses we likely would have gotten below the tax.

So, the team chose Xavier Tillman over getting below the tax, getting a tax distribution, etc.  I find that interesting.  It shows the value the team places on chemistry.[/quote]

Yes, I think that's going to be the proposed path.  And, very little chance of signing a vet buyout, since they're unlikely to be as patient as Harper Jr.

Was the net cost of that two 2nd round picks and we got Vucevic out of it?  If this team finishes top two in the East Brad deserves some serious accolades for this transition.

So we were 1.7 million over the tax line before the Tillman trade, his 2.5 million comes off our cap which means we are now 800 K under the tax line, but we need to fill two roster spots to get the 14 and I?m assuming the prorated vet is the same amount that Amari Williams got which was 490 K. So that would mean that would be 980 K, which would put us back over the tax line. Unless they only go with 13 roster players and pay the fine or whatever it is, that is the penalty. Because the penalty is going to be a hell of a lot less than the extra tax we would pay in 20 2728 when we have to extend Walsh, Queta and Garza from the vet mins they?re getting paid now, we could end up paying 80 million in tax just because of extending them if we didn?t reset the tax rate.

 Can anyone confirm if my math is correct?

We traded two 2nds with Niang and we just traded the Pelicans pick (we traded 2nds in the KP deal). So 3 2nds or am I missing something? Although the two 2nds from Niang were part of a trade down on draft night where we still got Amari and Shulga. So no real loss in picks there.

Either way, good stuff. This makes a lot more sense.

Yeah, I was counting the two Niang picks as one since I thought they originated from a single pick we controlled when the teardown started.  Guess I should have added Amari and Shulga as acquisitions.

and he had a couple of very nice blocks on doncic in the game as well. for that game alone he was worth the price.
