Jeremy Sochan

It has been reported that the Spurs and Sochan's agent are activly trying to find him a landing spot in the trade market since he has fallen out of the rotation this season. At first I thought nothing of this for the Cs but after diving in to him more I really think he might be Brads move at the deadline.

I went back and watched a few minutes of the Cs vs Spurs last season on March 29th. Wemby was out and the Spurs started Sochan at the 5. In that role he defended and did a great job vs JB on D. On offense they used him as a screener where he looked solid especially as a short role passer.

If the Cs where to trade for him he would fill the same role Minott has in his minutes as a small ball 5 but with added strength (230lbs vs 205lbs). He would give a healthy (JT) roster possibly the best switching 5 in the NBA with White, Walsh/Hugo, JB, Tatum, and Sochan. He also is a compliment to Queta rather than a hard to find upgrade.


As for the trade I'm not really sure...

Maybe Hauser for Sochan? I wonder if Hausers hot shooting and valuable contract gets the Spurs to add a 2nd? Or if Cs include Boucher/Tillman and the Spurs cut them this would get the Cs below the 1st apron.


The Knicks reportedly offered Yabu and Dink Pate for Sochan and where turned down.

I do like Sochan but would not be willing to part with Hauser or Simons to get him. Hes also a free agent this offseason.

I would pass on Sochan at this point.  He is someone to look at in free agency, but I would not make him the primary piece in a deal that involved sending out Simons or Hauser, and the Spurs would have to send back enough salary that the cost savings would not be enough to get the team out of the tax.

A trade of Hauser and Tillman/Boucher to Spurs for Sochan works (per https://fanspo.com/nba/trade-machine) and gets the Cs 1.4mill below the second apron. I am not great with the new CBA but I believe that 1.4 could then be used to add a 14th player on a prorated deal and just sneak the Cs under the 1st apron.

But the 1st apron does not matter all that much at this point of the season, other than letting us sign someone who was bought out of a large contract.  Sochan is certainly a short term downgrade from Hauser, as he is unlikely to figure out what to do in our system in two months if he has had trouble figuring out San Antonio for the last two seasons.  I do not see the value in your deal at all.  If Sochan was cost controlled and cheaper than Hauser for the next couple of seasons, it would be a different story, because there might be long-term value.  But Sochan can walk in the summer so we would have traded Hauser why?

I don't think Sochan is a center. The Spurs defense has typically fallen apart whenever they have used Sochan at center. That is why they went out and got Kornet this summer. Sochan doesn't provide enough rim deterrent. He is a top defensive PF but his inability to contribute offensively is why he can't hold a position there.
