Was reading an article from Adam Taylor that the Clippers want Simons.  Obviously, we know who the Celtics want from the Clips, Zubac.  Adam goes on to say, however, the C's should be wary of trading Simons because it'll create a depth issue, but then he mentions an idea of a second move with the Bulls for Ayo Dosunmu.

Simons for Zubac is a deal I'd make -- depending on what/who else had to be included on our side.  Losing Simons does hurt the bench scoring and it raises the question what to do with Q as a starter.

Dosunmu is an interesting addition as well but again, at what cost.

I'm not sure how the Celtics pull that off, but sure.

If LAC is in fact "interested" in Simons and willing to make a deal that includes Zubac, I say go for it.  Sure, you are trading some back court depth for front court depth, but Zubac is likely a starter for BOS.  I would rather have a starting Big over a back up guard.

There would be many options as a follow up move to bolster the back court depth.  Dosunmu would be one avenue but not nearly the only avenue.  Absolutely, if you can finagle Zubac for Simons, do it, and then sort out the rest.

White
Brown
Tatum
Queta
Zubac

Or

Pritchard
White
Brown
Tatum
Zubac

Walsh/Baylor/Hauser/Hugo/Queta

Depth looks fine still right? Most likely they can roll with lineup 2...Tatum would start PF and Queta off the bench for Zubac. Just hypotheticals

I agree that if they get Zubac, they probably go with line up 2 as the primary.  I don't see Zubac and Queta on the floor together.  Then go out and find a vet bench guard to bolster the bench.  Much easier to find that than a starting big.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Our best bet is that another team thinks Simons is a commodity rather than somebody they are agreeing to take on if we give them picks.

I'd still send out our 2026 1st with Simons for Zubac, but would be pretty annoyed if it ended up being like 2032 pick or something.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but both LA and BOS are 1st apron teams, right?

That means that neither can take on more salary than it sends out?  That would mean we'd need to find a third team to take on some salary.

The Clippers are about $1.1 million under the 1st apron.

Okay.  And they're hard-capped, right?

So, they don't have much flexibility in trading with the Celts without a third team involved.  Simons-for-Zubac, for instance, wouldn't work.

Correct.  They are actively looking to dump Chris Paul, of course, so I think it reasonable to view them as having closer to $3.5 million to play with, but the dollars need to be pretty tight.  Without dumping Paul, Zubac + Derrick Jones Jr. would fit for Simons if no third team was involved.

The other option is the Cs make Walsh or Hugo a lower minute starter. This only works if PP can handle it on the emotional/ego side, I dont say this as a negative for PP but its just human nature.

Ego aside id go with

White
Walsh (18-20mpg)
JB
JT
Zubac (30mpg)

6th PP (28-30mpg)
7th Queta (18mpg)
8th Hauser
9th Hugo
10th Baylor
Mavs
Wiz
Hornet

I believe a Hauser+Tillman+Picks for Zubac trade would work.

A team over the 1st apron can't take back more than they send out via salary matching, but we'd be using the TPE to absorb Zubac not using a salary match. The C's would  then have enough room to sign a minimum guy and be just below the 2nd apron.

Of course adding 8 million in salary would be super expensive tax wise, something like 50 million extra in tax+salary (off the top of my head). But they could do it. Tatum could slot into Hauser's minutes when he returns, and maybe you could re-sign Simons this offseason at like 19/per rather than 28 to decrease your tax burden a bit.
