This is insane
But not shocking....
There are just so many ways to cheat the system and next to impossible to regulate. I kinda miss the old days of Johhny and Rocco with a bit of shadiness and risk involved. I guess that had it's own level of corruption too. Just not as mainstream.
The sports workd made their bed on this one, now they'll have to sleep in their messy bed.
I was going to comment last night about the ever-increasing presence of gambling on the C's broadcast, but I thought better of it as I know there are many here who enjoy betting and (I assume) do so responsibly. But I'll say now that it's a bit ridiculous - so much emphasis on betting, and betting on details (like who'll score first...). I think all of us have probably thought of how easy it would be for a player to make some cash for his buddies by either focusing or limiting focus on scoring (for instance) in a game. Or providing 'insider info' to pals. So yeah I guess a gambling scandal involving players or former players who have access is far from shocking.
I see the intensity of this investigation as some measure of proof (maybe not proof exactly) of the unlikelihood that the NBA or NFL brass and referees conspire to favor teams. I think an individual certainly could do that, but I am always dubious of the claims here that a particular ref team is carrying out the wishes of Adam Silver or Pete Rozelle. I think I may have a minority opinion on that. The exposure of something like that would devastate the league, whereas the NBA will survive this one, showing that they've cooperated with investigators, ban Rozier, Jones, Billups, and address new practices to reduce the likelihood of anything like this occurring again.
