It strikes me that if insider information was being peddled, other players and NBA personnel have to be involved. They wouldn't necessary volunteer inside info without financial incentive, I wouldn't think.

I imagine there are a bunch of players praying to the heavens right now that they're not roped into this.  I imagine player prop manipulation is a lot more common than we're being led to believe.

Also, anybody having jarring flashbacks to 2018 ECF Game 7 and going "That would explain 2 for 14"?  :P

This is insane

But not shocking....

There are just so many ways to cheat the system and next to impossible to regulate.  I kinda miss the old days of Johhny and Rocco with a bit of shadiness and risk involved.  I guess that had it's own level of corruption too.  Just not as mainstream.

The sports workd made their bed on this one, now they'll have to sleep in their messy bed.

I was going to comment last night about the ever-increasing presence of gambling on the C's broadcast, but I thought better of it as I know there are many here who enjoy betting and (I assume) do so responsibly.   But I'll say now that it's a bit ridiculous - so much emphasis on betting, and betting on details (like who'll score first...).  I think all of us have probably thought of how easy it would be for a player to make some cash for his buddies by either focusing or limiting focus on scoring (for instance) in a game.   Or providing 'insider info' to pals.  So yeah I guess a gambling scandal involving players or former players who have access is far from shocking.

I see the intensity of this investigation as some measure of proof (maybe not proof exactly) of the unlikelihood that the NBA or NFL brass and referees conspire to favor teams.   I think an individual certainly could do that, but I am always dubious of the claims here that a particular ref team is carrying out the wishes of Adam Silver or Pete Rozelle.  I think I may have a minority opinion on that.  The exposure of something like that would devastate the league, whereas the NBA will survive this one, showing that they've cooperated with investigators, ban Rozier, Jones, Billups, and address new practices to reduce the likelihood of anything like this occurring again.

Where this is really going to hurt the league is when fans accuse any player having an off night of having ulterior motives. This is why you don't get in bed with gambling - legal or otherwise.

same for officials that make bad or questionable calls.  accusations happen now but this adds more fuel to that fire.

I do enjoy making silly little legal bets these days.  But just one case of how easy it is to alter the outcome of a bet:  I made a $2 parlay on both White and Queta to block one shot last night.  White blocked one, so I just needed Queta to get one.  He appeared to have a block, but got called on a questionable foul.  Mazzula decided not to challenge.  His not challenging could have affected the outcome of my bet.  The ref's making the call definitely affected my bet.  If it went to a challenge, the people deciding on the appeal in NYC could affect it...etc etc...

With this news breaking I thinki I have grounds for getting my $2 back!

Yup

An active coach in the NBA tied up in a gambling scandal.  Wow.  I guess he is only involved (allegedly) in the poker scam.  It is possible he didn't know.  They just lured him in to play and he kept winning, or at least not losing.  Or maybe they had something on him and there was coercion involved.  Still, pretty stunning.

At least he wasn't tied to point shaving or throwing games.  But, his coaching career is done, I assume.

A co-conspirator matching the description of Trail Blazers Coach, Chauncey Billups, is named in the Terry Rozier indictment. He is alleged to have told a defendant that the team would bench starters & tank the March 24 game. That defendant shared this info with bettors previously indicted in the Jontay Porter scandal.

The Trail Blazers went on to bench starters & lose by 28 points.

This was literally the next night after the game in which Terry Rozier allegedly tipped defendants off that he would leave a game early & to bet his unders.

This is going to be made into a movie.

Hope they arrest some NBA refs too. Obvious game-rigging is obvious, especially the team in Oklahoma City. They all probably bet SGA having more than 20 FTA.

The Portland Trail Blazers will elevate Tiago Splitter to interim head coach during the indefinite leave of Chauncey Billups. Billups was arrested early Thursday morning as part of a federal investigation into illegal gambling.

Splitter spent last season as head coach of Paris Basketball and was hired by the Blazers as assistant coach this past offseason. Splitter previously worked as a player development coach for several seasons with the Brooklyn Nets and then an assistant coach for one season with the Houston Rockets under Ime Udoka.

Splitter led Paris Basketball to winning the French championship and the French Cup last season.

The Blazers also strongly considered Nate Bjorkgren for the role.

I read somewhere this was an illegal gambling poker ring, is that not true?
