0 - 60 win seasons for the Gervin era. Topped out at 53 wins.

1 - 60 win season for the D-Rob era. He also had a 59 win season the following year.

5 - 60 win seasons for the Duncan era. D-Rob was in his final year in 2003 when Duncan got his first one. Duncan also had a 59 win season and 4 58 win seasons. So that number goes to 10 seasons of 58+ wins. Impressive.

1 - 60 win season for the Kawhi era (post Duncan).

I'd love to know who are the 4 other teams. My first guess was rookie Larry Bird, rookie D-Rob, rookie Duncan and that KG team as mentioned. That would be all Spurs / Celtics. Tied 2-2 until Wemby gave them the edge.

But the rookie D-Rob season didn't make it. It was 21 wins to 56 wins. So one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history but did not pass the 60 win mark. Nor did the rookie Duncan season. 20 wins to 56 wins. Same story.

The rookie Bird season does qualify. 29 wins to 61 wins. So we have 3 of the 5 seasons with Wemby, KG's Celtics, rookie Bird season. I wonder who the other two are.

Talk that Portland are considering making a coaching change (Tiago Splitter) in the summer. Organization feels the team has underachieved this season.

I agree with them that the team has underachieved. I think that is more of a 55 win team than a 40-45 win team. But I don't think it is due to the coach. It is because of injuries.

Guards - Jrue has only played 49 games this year. Shaedon Sharpe has only played 48 games this year. Scoot has only played 26 games this season. Those are their top 3 guards. Their 4th guard Blake Wesley who got off to a great start this season also got injured early and played only 28 games.

Forwards - Avdija has played 62 games. Jerami Grant has played 57 games. T Camara has been healthy. So 2 of their top 3 forwards have missed large chunks of the season.

Centers - Clingan has been available but Rob Williams continues to miss a lot of games. He played 55 games on the season.

That is a fantastic 9-10 man rotation when those guys are healthy. They could win somewhere in the mid-50s win wise. But they haven't been healthy. It isn't the coach's fault that so many of his players have been hit by injuries. The coach has done a good job keeping them at .500 despite the injuries.

I made myself a little Excel model to game out how the East teams might end up with a week to go in the season. Imagine this scenario where ATL, PHI, TOR, CHA and ORL all end up on 46-36. How would the tiebreak work in that case? I asked ChatGPT but I think I might have stumped it as it's frozen for 20 min now trying to figure it out

Well it finally answered...this is the likely order in the event of a 5-team tie for 5th seed:

5. Atlanta
6. Philadelphia
7. Toronto
8. Charlotte
9. Orlando

Here?s why.

The NBA?s multi-team tiebreaker first gives priority to a division winner over non-division winners, then looks at winning percentage in games among the tied teams.

So the first question is Atlanta. In your scenario, Atlanta would still be the Southeast leader, and they already sit first in that division ahead of Charlotte and Orlando. If they remain the division winner in your 46?36 scenario, they jump to the top of this five-team tie automatically.

After that, among the other four teams, Philadelphia has the strongest case for the next spot. Philly owns the tiebreaker over Toronto, Charlotte, and Orlando individually: Reuters notes the Sixers hold the tiebreaker over Toronto, Sixers Sense notes they clinched it over Charlotte, and Yahoo?s standings/tiebreaker roundup says the 76ers have the tiebreaker over Orlando.

For the next two spots, Toronto should come out ahead of Charlotte in your scenario. Toronto and Charlotte split their season series 2?2, so their two-team tiebreak would fall past head-to-head. StatMuse shows the 2?2 split, and ESPN?s team comparison has Toronto with a much better current conference record than Charlotte. Since the remaining games in your projection are Eastern Conference games for both teams, Toronto would stay ahead there.

That leaves Orlando last among the tied teams. Orlando loses the relevant tiebreaks to Philly, Toronto, Charlotte, and Atlanta: Yahoo?s tiebreak roundup snippet says Philly, Toronto and Charlotte all hold the tiebreaker over Orlando, and Atlanta swept Orlando 4?0.
