One  thing with the proliferation of autos in modern cards, its never been cheaper or easier to get autos of all sorts of players. I have a buddy that is trying to get an auto of all of the guys on the NBA 75 list.  He has something like 55-57 of them already.

Interesting.  I?d say it?s the somewhat the opposite.  It?s definitely easier to get autographs now but most definitely wouldn?t say cheaper.  I?ve just about completed a set of 60 signed cards from the 90s and some of these guys cost an arm and leg.  Non hall of famers too.

Not to mention fanatics has rookies who haven?t even played a game at the professional level yet charging $200 to sign a card

That?s part of what makes it fun. Try to predict who will have a break out year, then sell high.

Yeah, autographs are weird.  I generally collect autos from the card companies, because they're authenticated and for whatever reason hold more value.  At a meet and greet, you tend to pay more than the card will sell for.  But, you're in close proximity to the player, so you're paying for the experience and the memory.

I have a large Tatum collection with a super cool Tatum Rated Rookie Green Ink auto. At one point I had almost the entire "Rainbow" of Tatum Prizm rookies but when the card boom hit I sold many of the SPs.

I'm glad someone else brought this topic up because I've been wanting to ask for years.

Thanks, great post and I am totally jealous!! I love the Prizm rookie cards. Good call on loading up on Tatum.  The Topps cards will be coming out in October, it will be interesting. Technically the first Topps Flagg rookie card is out from the draft.

Here I just googled the Panini Base rookie card. Take it for what it is worth, this sound really high but, it's from google. I never saw them that high but it's what google gave me for the Base rookie.

Funny there are several videos on YouTube about the Zion Williams card, I had no Idea!! So the video said on average the Zion Rookie Panini Base Card was going for $1000 in 2021. That's crazy for a really common base case, but 2021 was crazy for cards. Now that exact card at PSA 10 averages around $35. that's pretty crazy. I think you should buy what you like, but if you are hoping a card will keep value, I think rarity is king, like low serial numbered cards of rookie players /25 for example, then hoping the player lives up to the hype, which we all know often does not happen.

Yeah.  For instance, Coopee Flagg autos are basically priced at certain superstar level right now.  He'd have to win multiple MVPs to return value.
