I still believe Lillard was never a possibility for the Celtics.
It's hard to know, because we don't know when Portland's offer was. Here's what Shams said:
Damian Lillard had offers from "dozens" of teams around the league before signing a three-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. "Boston, Minnesota, dozens of other teams had minimum and mid-level exception offers out to Damian Lillard in the last several weeks," said Charania.
If the other offers were all minimums or mini-MLEs, I could see Boston winning out and being a realistic possibility.
If other teams had offered the full MLE, then Boston probably never stood a chance, particularly if those were west coast teams. And my guess is, as soon as Portland made their offer Dame quickly accepted. He pretty much got the most money available and he's in the same city as his kids.
I know they're extravagantly rich guys, but I can relate to that. I'd work in Siberia if that's where my kids were. Add in the most money available and it's a no-brainer, contender or not.
