Can't imagine many Spanish kids grow up dreaming of playing in the Big XII.

and maybe even less likely BYU...but

Kansas, Houston, Baylor, Iowa State, BYU, Texas Tech, are all high level college basketball teams, with the NIL money kids aren't playing for free if they are a top player.

Honestly, I'll always think of BYU as a WAC school.  Blame the old man in me.

Oh I am more of an old man than you, it is weird that they are in the Big12.   Lots of the other fan bases really love to hate them.   Probably because they have a really good bball program.  They have one of the top freshman recruits in the country this year with A.J. Dybantsa.

Apparently Gonzalez had an offer to play at BYU. I suspect he turned it down out of fear of being exposed at the collegiate level.
Gonzalez had an offer to play on a way worse team against way worse competition and turned it down because he was afraid?

I get why people don't like the pick. He's a euro that you're drafting on potential because he hasn't proven anything.

But let's face it all these picks at 28 are throwing darts. Most rankers have him ranked roughly around where we picked him (generally it was higher). Don't understand the meltdowns.

Actually I do understand the meltdowns. It happens after every single draft.

He had to have known he wasnt going to get much playing time on Real Madrid, which wouldnt help his draft stock. BYU = more exposure = higher pick = millions of more dollars. If its not fear of being exposed, it?s just an awful financial decision.

Apparently Gonzalez had an offer to play at BYU. I suspect he turned it down out of fear of being exposed at the collegiate level. He looked okay playing in small doses in Real Madrid against older and slower players, but I think his deficiencies would have been really glaring in D1 in a good conference.
- For a guy who people claim is a good defender, he doesn?t move laterally well and gets blown by a lot. Slim chance he can guard 1?s and 2?s effectively at the next level.
- Panics and forced shots shots in traffic far too often
- Consistently misses open 3?s, bad mechanics.
- Hasn?t really shown any promise as a creator
- Major tunnel vision as a passer
- People claim what sets him apart is is motor and the fact he plays hard. Who cares? There are 30-40 guys in any given draft you can say that about.

In my mock I had him going 36th to Brooklyn but honestly felt even that was too high for him.

Guys left on the board who I think are significantly better prospects:
Maxime Raynaud
Adou Thiero
Ryan Kalkbrenner
Noah Penda
Alijah Martin
Kam Jones
Jamir Watkins

Im obviously a big admirer of Brad Stevens but this is an awful awful pick and he has yet to prove he is a good identifier of talent in the draft. We have no bigs and he just drafted another (probably less athletically gifted) Jordan Walsh.

Sorry to rant but I havent been this angry over a pick since Romeo Langford.

So much of what you just said is directly opposite of what most scouts say about him. "Scared" of being exposed - he played against tougher competition for Real Madrid than Igor did at BYU. Not worth arguing about with you though.

Just needlessly negative.

I think if Real Madrid played BYU, it wouldn't even be close.  Real Madrid would be way better.  I think Hugo chose Real Madrid because he is from Madrid, Spain.  He would probably be more of a household name if he had played at BYU, but that isn't exactly Duke or Kentucky in terms of basketball.  The question is if more regular playing time would have improved his 3-point shooting.

It will be interesting to see him in the summer league.  Based on the very limited highlights that I have viewed, I think he will look OK vs. summer league competition.  But that is still way below the NBA.

His game looks like it'll be perfect for summer league especially if they put the ball in his hands.

Remember that last summer, Jaden Springer was one of the best players on the floor in the summer league.  If you want to be something more than a 2-way or a 4-AAAA player, you have to stand out in summer league.  I have my doubts that Hugo at 19 will be able to do that.  Seems like he should be able to hold his own but I don't know about standing out, who knows.

When Brad talked about summer league last night he made it sound like it's not a priority for them as far as Gonzalez is concerned. He said he wasn't sure whether he'll play or not since his season is still going on.

Is Hugo coming over any time soon though? Or is he going to be left to develop in Spain at Real Madrid for another year or two? That's the one thing that makes me leery about international prospects.

The fact that his offensive game is underdeveloped is also a bit concerning.

I still regret the Celtics trading away the Desmond Bane pick. Now that guy was such a pure SHOOTER!! And he's still one of the better offensive players in the NBA today.

Can anyone explain to me why we couldn't have drafted both Pritchard and Bane? Giving away that pick at #30 with Bane available still puzzles me to this day.

Hugo is coming over, Brad has already said as much.

Bane was a mistake made by Danny, who had started to lose his touch.  We won a title, so I have moved on.

Good to know. At least we'll see him in camp and get to see what we have soon.

Yeah, we've all moved on from DA. He set us up great with the Brooklyn Nets robbery. Greatest GM heist of all time but was never able to really put together any great deals after that. At least Brad, his protege, brought another title home to Boston.

Our 2017-18 team was amazing. That was the culmination of all of Ainge's work. It's not his fault Hayward only played 5 healthy minutes on a max deal and Kyrie was out for the end of the season and playoffs. We would have had a few contending years there for sure.

Either way, glad to finally get one last year. Makes all the difference in the world.

Also, hard to blame Ainge for Bane. The other two 1st rounders he took were fantastic choices (Nesmith and Pritchard). We were never going to carry 3 rookies on the roster.

Did we need to keep Carsen Edwards?  Was it imperative to dump Enes Kanter/Freedom (sending out Bane) so we could have the salary space to sign Tristan Thompson for nearly double what Enes made, plus an extra year that we had to subsequently dump the following summer?  We could have kept the pick.  Ainge had a particularly bad offseason (the Hayward trade exception and Jeff Teague being other unsuccessful decisions).

Not surprising.  Gonzalez?s season literally finished last night.  It?s much more useful for players who have been off a month or three.
