The Spurs find themselves in an interesting spot from a roster standpoint where almost anything is on the table (except trading Wemby, obviously). They are the team I?m most excited to see what they look like next year.

If Im SA?s front office im not looking to take any big swings and just looking to build out the roster around Wembanyama using my draft capital and cap space. Sounds like Giannis isnt available. Jaylen probably isnt available. And they should stay far away from KD in my opinion.

However, I think I would - and I havent seen anyone float this idea yet- trade De?Aron Fox. The Fox trade made sense at the time but that was before they knew they were getting Dylan Harper. I think it?s a bit redundant to have those two paired together in the backcourt. Also, I like Fox as a player, but not sure he has the type of game that is going to age that well as he heads into his thirties, relies mostly on speed.

It?s safe to say given recent rumors that Toronto wants to take a swing on an All-Star caliber player, and also need a point guard. So heres my fake trade:

TOR gets: De?Aron Fox
SAS get: Immanuel Quickley, Ochai Agbaji, 9th overall pick, future 1st rounder.

Then bolster the frontcourt by drafting Carter Bryant 9th and Thomas Sorber 14th.

PG: Dylan Harper , Immanuel Quickley
SG: Devin Vassell , Ochai Agbaji
SF: Stephon Castle , Keldon Johnson
PF: Jeremy Sochan , Harrison Barnes , Carter Bryant
C: Victor Wembanyama , Thomas Sorber

Beats giving up good young assets for 37 year old KD imo.

But its just an example of one of many routes they can take - what would you do?

Sidenote: I was listening to the Kevin O?Connor podcast and his guest floated the idea of them trying to get Derrick White back and I actually didnt hate the idea for them, but it would have to be a hell of a package.

If I were SAS, I would be going for it now. There's no guarantee on the future health of Wembanyama and they have the pieces to land a major impact player right now.

As for the Celtics specifically, I see Jaylen and White as having similar trade value. Jaylen's a better player, but White has a better contract and can more easily slide in as a connecting piece on literally any team in the league.

I'm not looking to deal either of Jaylen or White, but I do think SAS should be calling and offering the #2 pick for them. Maybe with Jaylen you get Vassell back and with White you get Johnson, but in both cases, you should absolutely be getting back at least #2. I'd be requesting our 2028 swap back, as well

I actually have heard the idea mentioned somewhere. And for the right package, I think it is a good idea.

the problem is that there is also no guarantee on the current health of Wemby. Given this, they should be looking for a larger window rather than a shorter one.

I wouldn't do anything until I was absolutely convinced that Giannis was off the market.

There is no guarantee on the health of any player. Teams should always be looking at either building a contender or tanking. Spurs have tanked long enough. Time to start winning

I could y be more in this camp . One injury and it all changes and you certainly cannot count on a surgeon to do a good job. They?re untouchable as a catholic priest .
Webanyama is already awesome right now. Go for it now.

I go back and forth on this. They've drafted early for how many years in a row now? I like some of their guys, but Wemby is the only all-star they have right now. Harper may get there. Castle may get there. But what is the likelihood and how soon will that happen?

They have Fox now. I do think they should keep Fox as a guard next to Wemby.

I think they need professional basketball players at the 3, 4, and 5. Sochan and Barnes are not enough. They need a legit 5 that can play next to Wemby or by himself, and they need a high level wing.

Spurs were 21-25 with Wemby and only had 5 games of Wemby and Fox. They aren't going to bad again anyway.  They need to upgrade the SF and PF positions.  They have the assets to do so, so they should.

It's always time to start winning. Trading Fox isn't tanking. It's creating more options that lead to a being a contender. Sure, if you can get Giannis you do it. But the premise of this idea was that Giannis wasn't available.

They traded for Fox so that they can contend now. He?s 28 years old. Wemby is going into year three.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

They don't need Giannis though. Trading Fox for draft picks and young players is a tank move, not a win now move.

I wouldn't do anything until I was absolutely convinced that Giannis was off the market.

Yeah, I would make a run at Giannis if I was SAN.  He will make about $54M in 2025-26 contract year.  SAN will not have cap space to absorb this so they will need to send out at last $43M in one form or another (they can combine salaries).  Vassell ($27M) and Keldon Johnson ($17.5M) would get them there.  #2 this season and quite few more picks would need to go out.

For those who want BOS to shake things up, would you want BOS to get in on this?

Brown, picks to MIL
Vassell, Johnson, #2, other picks to BOS
Giannis to SAN

BOS would save about $11M,  Then Keldon Johnson to BKN or something and save $17M more.

Holiday
White
Vassell
Tatum
Porzingis

We are not better in 2025-25, but would have freed up cap/apron space and would have some good picks to deal for reinforcements for 2026-27 and beyond.  You use #2 for a top player, then attach the future picks to Holiday or Vassell or Hauser to try and get back something better.

It is risky, I prefer to keep Brown, but this is how a trade could look.
