KP:  Expiring, possibly on trade block
Kornet:  Free agent
Horford:  Free agent, will retire soon
Tatum:  Recovering from Achilles

Queta:  minimum contract
Tillman:  minimum contract

How do we keep the roster in contention with the big man situation so precarious?

(Insert rant about not drafting Filipowski last year, haha.)

I said the same thing about last years draft.  He was sitting right there!  Just like I said about Anthony and we took Nesmith, the PG we needed was right there!

You realize the Nesmith pick was an extremely good pick in hindsight, right? And Cole Anthony was just salary dumped with KCP and ORL had to pay extra draft capital to get off of those contracts.

I realize that even though it was a "salary dump", Anthony has had a better career statistically and he was the need at the time.

This is why I think they keep KP.

But any deal they send jrue out on will need a big in return. And I think they draft the guy from Creighton even tho he looks like a big stiff to replace Kornet.

Yes, the calculus would change if they get a decent big in return for Holiday.  Not sure how likely that is.  For example, would people be happy if we traded Jrue to Utah for John Collins?  Or maybe Holiday and Hauser for Collins and Kessler?  Collins would have to pick up his option, which I expect he plans to do.

If we brought in Collins and Kessler, sign Kornet, keep Queta, maybe draft a big, are we then in a position to trade Porzingis?  If we kept Porzingis too, we would have the option of extending Collins or Porzingis.  I think I would rather have Porzingis.

I really wanted Nesmith.  Huge draft bunker.

The guy I predicted Danny would take was Maxie, though.  He seemed like a prototypical Danny pick.

Perhaps unrealistically, I'm hoping the team bites the tax bullet and brings back Luke and Horford.  Next offseason things should lighten up financially, and with the Lakers sale probably already boosting new ownership's equity, perhaps they find a way to not blow up the team completely.

I think they can bring back Kornet if they want to but I wonder if Horford will even want to come back for a season without Tatum.  Seems like he would be perfect for any number of contending teams.  I guess we can offer more than most teams could but it is probably going to be a long season.  I don't see Horford playing just for the sake of playing in what might be his last season.  If he decides to play another season, I think he is going to want to do that on a team with a chance at a title.

Horford likely is taking it season to season.  He would probably be happy with a 1 year deal.  Kornet is probably going to look for a longer term deal.  He can suffer through the lost season without Tatum and stick around for when he comes back.  Horford might not last more than 1 more season.  I am assuming that Horford will move on.

Most of the league has the same problem.  Look at the two teams in the finals.  OKC has 2 7 footers and everyone else that matters is a 6'-5" guard.  IND has Turner and Siakam.  They at least have Toppin as a 3rd sort of big.  Thomas Bryant plays some center for them  Turner is a legit center, Siakam more of a swing PF.

I wouldn't want to have any less size than IND.  I think the OKC model is going prove hard for other teams to replicate if they try to copy them.  I think you need a legit C on the floor most of the time.  That means you need at least a starter and a solid bench center.  You can get by with Tatum as the PF swing but you need a 3rd big that can play as a PF.

If we lose Horford and trade Porzingis, our two centers are Kornet (hopefully) and Queta.  That 3rd big right now would be Tillman.  This might be fine for the lost season but this is not nearly enough for a contending team.  I would be OK with Kornet, Queta, and Tillman for 2025-26 but very disappointed if there was not significant improvement for 2026 and beyond.
