KP:  Expiring, possibly on trade block
Kornet:  Free agent
Horford:  Free agent, will retire soon
Tatum:  Recovering from Achilles

Queta:  minimum contract
Tillman:  minimum contract

How do we keep the roster in contention with the big man situation so precarious?

(Insert rant about not drafting Filipowski last year, haha.)

I mean that is a real issue and one of the reasons I believe the run ended when Tatum got hurt.  The simple answer has to be in the trade of KP and/or Jrue you get a big back.

How about something like this.

Boston - Allen
Cleveland - Holiday, Claxton, 8, 19, 28
Brooklyn - Garland, Okoro, 32

Seems like reasonable enough value. Not sure Brooklyn would want that sort of trade, but I can't imagine they get anyone as good as Garland at 8 or 19 and they still have 26 and 27 along with 32 to move up if they want.   Cavs get better fits even if less talented, get a top 10 pick (and some later 1st) to develop, and get out of the 2nd apron.  Boston shaves a bunch of salary and turns Holiday into a quality starting center.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Our big rotation has been what I've been thinking about this off-season as well.

There are three main paths:

1. Big move for an established big
The problem with this option is that there just aren't that many available. If they are, the entire league wants them. Jarrett Allen, Myles Turner, Naz Reid, etc. are all in this tier this off-season.

There are a lot of meh centers grouped around the middle (I call this the Gafford tier), but the gap between this tier of centers and the ones you can develop is not significant enough to trade big assets for.

2. Trade for a cast off big
This is not the exciting option, but it is viable. Zinger fits this mold right now, and that's why it may be worth just keeping him. Ayton, Mark Williams, and Julius Randle all fit this category of below-market-value-cost-for-production.

3. Development
Walker Kessler and Jabari Smith are both examples of players in this category, but both could be considered each of the last two as well. Any high draft picks for Queen or Malauch in this draft would require one of our top 5 players.

Fringe guys include players like Queta, Bol, and any number of other guys that NBA developmental coaches see the potential in that armchair scouts like myself can't.

We did this with Kornet, but his upside is somewhat limited. Knicks did this with Hartenstein. Wolves did this with Reid. Etc.

Of those 3 options, I think we need to take multiple chances on options 2 and 3. I'd keep Zinger if we can get under the 2nd apron a different way, give Queta a bit more burn this year, and sign one more minimum contract big that has some upside (or draft one).

I said the same thing about last years draft.  He was sitting right there!  Just like I said about Anthony and we took Nesmith, the PG we needed was right there!

You realize the Nesmith pick was an extremely good pick in hindsight, right? And Cole Anthony was just salary dumped with KCP and ORL had to pay extra draft capital to get off of those contracts.

I simply don't know how you replace Al Horford. His versatility is off the charts.

agreed.  the loss of Horford is going to be very noticeable when we need a big that can defend on the perimeter, defend in the post against other bigs, provide shotblocking and provide outside shooting.

I wouldn't blame him if he wanted to retire or leave and not waste what may be his last season but if the team can keep him for 2 years until Tatum should be back to form that would be the desirable outcome.

Of the bigs that really need to go, Tillman tops that list.  talk about absolute dead weight.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

I'm with you but if we keep KP it gets harder and harder to get underneath the 2nd apron far enough to re-sign Kornet.

So we'll have to fill out the big rotation with Queta, Tillman, 28, vet mins, and possible someone we get back in a Jrue trade.

That's pretty brutal when you consider KP's probably gonna miss 30 games

Let Kornet go. He is not worth more than the minimum. He is replaceable. Let Tillman go. His body is kaput. Queta can stay.

I'd love for Horford to stay but that may not be possible. If I were him, I'd leave BOS for another contender who can offer me a larger contract. He is too good to sign for the minimum and it is doubtful BOS can offer more than the minimum. He would be doing himself a disservice staying in BOS.

Porzingis is a keeper ... for now.

This is exactly my point when I rant every time I see comments about how we need to get rid of Porzingis.

Horford will probably not sign back with us for 2025-26 (season with no Tatum) and may be retired by 2026-27.  To me, he is out of the equation.  That leaves Porzingis and Kornet who we have some control over, nothing certain, but we can probably keep these guys if we want to.  I don't see what we get if we don't.

I really wanted Post out of Boston College.  Now he's got a nice little role with the Warriors.

I don't think Tillman is an effective option because of him being a tweener.   I really like him as a person from what I have seen and he  hes the typical Michigan State toughness.  His length isn't ideal and his athletic ability is average which makes for a bad combination if you're trying to compete.  He is fine as an end of the bench big.

I think they need to keep Porzingis but he has to take a serious pay cut. He?s not a $30 mil per player anymore. If the Cs could get him for like $15-20 mil that would be a better pill to swallow. The reality is they will still need someone to back him up because he only plays like 50% of his games but at least it keeps some continuity with the roster for when JT gets back.
