Late first round picks are a crap-shoot, the odds are any guy drafted 25-30 will never amount to much in the NBA. I'm fine taking a shot on 6'6 210 pound good athlete with a 6'11 wingspan who plays hard.

If you're the Celtics, you've now taken three different 6'6 wing plays in the last three drafts. Hugo at #28, Baylor at #30 and Walsh at #37. They are different styles of player, but the hope is that one of them emerges into at least a rotation player long term.

Yeah, if I recall correctly, it is something like 20% of picks in the 20s become rotation caliber players. 80% of them never make it that far (3rd string to out of NBA).

There?s talk that a lot of colleges tried to bring him over but he opted to stay with Real Madrid. And that if he went to college, he?d be a Top 10 prospect.

Have to think Brad doesn?t really have a big preference among the remaining bigs.  Or maybe he loves Gonzalez so much that he had to take him.  I wonder if Wolf had been there whether he?d have been the pick. But given the need at 5, if Brad had a significant favorite among the bigs on the board, you?d think he would have gone in that direction. Or maybe he doesn?t like any of them and we?ll get another surprise at 32.

Some highlights of him. 9min video. Mostly scoring (2/3rds of video), some passing, and some defense.

The scoring looks limited. A lot of cuts and some offensive rebounds. More of what you would expect from a big than a guard. Some 3s but basic ones. Some nice drives & transition plays. Passing looks interesting but not great. Defense was a lot of weakside shot blocking. Impressive blocks.

This time last year he was a top 5 pick in most mock drafts. BYU wanted him big time. He decided to stay and play in Spain.

If he had went to BYU he probably would have been a top 10 pick in the draft. He has a high ceiling and next season is a perfect time for him to get some run.

I think this time next year we will be counting him as a positive piece going forward and he will pass Walsh on the pecking order.

Now they can get a big at 32 or Fleming. They will be guarenteed one of those three many thought they would take at 28.

Euros who do not play for their teams have some of the biggest bust potential in NBA draft picks.

Bright side he is on one of the best teams in Europe. At least it is not a middling team. Then they are pretty much locked on to be a bust.

Exactly. He?s getting minutes trimmed on his European team!

He is a project player.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Until last night, I had never even heard of him, and now, everything I know is based on what I read here, his abbreviated draft introduction and Yahoo Sports. I think I?m going to defer the the scouts? judgment here.

Pretty much my feelings.  If the kid pans out, great.  Want to see it happen.  However, my expectations are very tempered.  It really is a crapshoot in that part of the draft.

agreed.

staying optimistic this kid lives up to his projected draft slot rather than the slot he fell to.  not expecting a lot next season but need to see annual improvements while on his rookie deal.  Hoping to see a big picked at 32 that shows some promise.

Odds are a 28th pick is never going to be in your rotation, so if we ever get anything out of him other than trade filler, it's a win. He was espn's 22nd rated player, so maybe we got a gem.

Without looking does anyone know who the Celtics drafted the last time they had the 28th pick?

I'm an editor/cameraman Freelance I have worked with ESPN for over 30 years. shot a lot of sports and I will say the eye test doesn't mean very much. Look at a kid like Clayton Jr, to me he should have been a top 5 prospect. I love his game! As far as Gonzalez, the only people that can really have any opinion of him are the scouts. They are the ones you have to trust. Watching highlights to me is kind of a waste of time, fun, but what are you really learning? As far as the draft, I am predicting that teams are going to start loading up on similar players, maybe stashing some. Injuries are becoming a major concern in today's game. Who would have ever believed you would lose Haliburton and Tatum to the same injury weeks apart? It used to be, you get a star player and ran with them for years, now you have to account for injuries more than ever. So you might as well stock up on the kind of player you really like! If he pans out, he is a Brad kind of guy.
