Joe Mazzulla shared that Tatum addressed the team in a speech on Thursday, the day before his debut, to tell them how much their performance this year has motivated him during his grueling ten months of rehab. He also mentioned how important it was for him to be with the team while recovering - traveling with the team, sharing in their ups and downs, because being in rehab was lonely and getting to experience the joy and competitive nature they displayed made him want to be a part of it, and he appreciated them still making him feel like he was a part of the team even when he wasn't playing.

Quote
Tatum spoke up in a team meeting on Thursday, sharing a message of gratitude and appreciation that resonated with head coach Joe Mazzulla.

?He talked a little bit, and just the way that he talked to his teammates, about his teammates, I just think he came on the other side of (his injury) a better person,? Mazzulla said after Tatum played his first 27 minutes of the season in a 120-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden. ?I know he became a better player, and that?s all you could ask for.?

Unlike some players who choose to recover from injuries away from their teams, Tatum worked out daily at the Celtics? training facility, attended in meetings and film sessions, and sat on the bench for nearly every game, home and road. He watched closely as the team shattered its lukewarm preseason expectations, surging toward the top of the Eastern Conference standings while boasting one of the NBA?s best net ratings.

His speech, Tatum said, ?was more just being vulnerable, showing my appreciation to the team of how they have played this season, how they?ve motivated me.?

?Every single day, the joy and competitive nature that they displayed, I wanted to be a part of that,? Tatum said. ?And I say it all the time, going through rehab and being injured is lonely. And it?s not intentional, but there?s a lot ? I couldn?t practice for a while, I couldn?t be in the game, when they were on the court I was in the weight room having to do my own thing. So you feel isolated in a sense.

?But I just expressed that being around as much as possible, going to games, being on the plane, really made me feel like I was still very much a part of the team, and how thankful to the group for just being themselves that I was. Thankful to the coaches that have extended their days a lot by helping me during rehab on the court in pickup games and my conditioning. So I really was just kind of telling everybody in the room that they all played a part in essentially getting me to this moment. And I was very thankful for that.?

As for Joe, he said he was grateful to play a part in JT's story, his recovery and for them to all come together as a team to be there for JT.

Quote
Combined, Tatum and Mazzulla used the word ?gratitude? or ?grateful? a total of 12 times in their Friday news conferences.

?Outside of basketball, I think it just means a lot, just as a person and just our relationship,? Mazzulla said of Tatum?s return. ?When you care about somebody and you see them go through something, you want to be able to see the fruits of that labor. So it?s just a credit to his work ethic and the people around him, but also to the team. I think it was a good opportunity for us to come together as a team, be there for a teammate, have a teammate make the team better.

?So for me personally, just grateful to be a part of someone else?s story. I mean, we?ve got a bunch of guys in that locker room that all have their own journey and their own story. Grateful that they allow me to be a part of that, and being a part of JT story is just kind of where we are right now.?

Great to see him on the court again.    He looks rusty, the missed dunk was bad, and he might have lost some lift, and maybe lateral mobility.   He did a lot better after making the first bucket and seemed to be himself.  He seems to be a little cautious in terms of collisions.

It is going to take time, but he is an big upgrade and showed signs of being a star again.   Our bench was strengthened as a result of him being hurt.  It will take time for him to regain his confidence.  But he passed the first test and did so well once he hit a shot.

The passing and feel at a minimum are leaps and bounds better than what we have at his size. The scoring will be inefficient and a lower volume this year, but this is what a successful game will look like for him. 15/12/7? Sign me the heck up man.

I happened to be in the car for 4 hours yesterday afternoon, listening to Boston Sports talk for most of the time.  4 different shows on two different stations.  It was all hand wringing over would Tatum fit in, who is the #1, who will be announced last, and so on.  I don't understand how people were worried that having one of the best players in the world, return to the team he won a title with, was somehow going to be a bad thing.

That said, I expected a bumpy start (he started 0-6), but all in, he did much better than I expected.  First half, 2-8, +5, second half, 4-8, +15.  One thing I was interested in seeing is how the other players were with Tatum on or off (all the talk of Tatum messing up the flow or whatever).  Below is a comparison of each player's +/- per36 with Tatum (first column) and without (second) column.  The team overall was +15 per36, for reference.

            w/ Tatum   wo/ Tatum
White         26.7         26.3
Brown        36.0           0.0
Queta         29.1         -7.8
Pritchard     52.6          0.0
Garza         18.0         18.2
Hauser         1.7        -24.0

These are per36 numbers, so they do get distorted some due to the extrapolation.  Brown, Queta, Pritchard, and Hauser were all much better with Tatum than without.  White and Garza weren't much different.  Garza only had 6 min with Tatum and only 18 min total.  The minutes without Tatum was low for White, Queta, and Hauser.  Apparently all the key players were just fine playing with Tatum, Tatum did not disrupt anything.

As to NRtg, Tatum was +32.3 for the game, the team was +20.8.  So the team was far better with Tatum on than off.

Welcome Back Jayson!

They need narratives to talk about each week, and this one has just presented itself to them for their storyboard. They'll get a lot of mileage out of this one again, they will have weeks of content analyzing "the fit", whether Jaylen isn't sufficiently enthusiastic-sounding when talking about JT in interviews, and the first time JT scores more points than JB. It's free content  :police:

Now they can return to their usual programming: 24/7/365 Patriots talk.
