Post-Achilles Jayson Tatum will be washed like John Wall. He's a slasher, not a shooter like Kevin Durant

First and foremost, I wish Tatum's recovery will be fine.

Having that said, I seriously doubt he may even be All-Star caliber player after his injury.

Many wishes Tatum to have a similar outcome like KD. But KD is almost near 7-footer who's among the most lethal mid-range shooters in NBA history.

Tatum, like John Wall, are completely different type of players as they constantly attack the rim to score in the paint. Every inch of athleticism is extremely valuable for their game as slasher, John Wall went from All-NBA caliber player to washed over night after his injury.

Is it expected Jayson Tatum will looked washed similar to John Wall? He's a slasher, not an shooter like KD.

Interesting post. Overstates Tatum as a slasher vs shooter but the poster is right that Tatum is not a shooter in the caliber of Kevin Durant. That shooting touch was the main reason why people were more optimistic about Durant after his return than previous star players who have had achilles injuries.

Rather than John Wall as a comp. Kobe Bryant seems like a good comp in terms of style of play. Kobe was much older though. Wall is  a bad comp because he had no jump-shot. He was a below average scorer from everywhere outside of the painted area. That is not Tatum.

This is such an inaccurate statement that I can't take the post seriously.

I have a question. When the injury happened, he immediately grabbed his lower ankle area as seen in that picture all over the internet. Would that mean it is not ACL? I would think it could point towards shattered ankle perhaps. I am definitely not a doctor but from what I have read, you dont grab your ankle after an ACL injury.

At this point, we all wish it was an ACL - which would be his knee and is considered less serious. An achilles is the worst possible scenario and that's the area he appeared to be grabbing
I think he meant Achilles, That is what everyone is assuming, from what I know about the injury its a good assumption. I pushed off my right foot similar to that and ruptured my achilles. It hurt like hell for I guess about a half hour. I am a cameraman that shoots sports. Obviously, NOT an athlete, so I have no idea how long he will be out, but I had no lingering effects after it healed. Took me about 10 months, of course basketball shape is very different.

Guys calm down.

Even if it?s an Achilles Tatum is young and his skills will get even better

He?s not really a power finisher or leaper like Ant

As long as they don?t rush JT back he will be back or 97.5% back to his old self.

It is the Durant comparison that is more interesting to me than the John Wall one.

Tatum is a good shooter but not a great shooter. Durant is a great shooter. One of the best jump-shooters ever. That helped Durant navigate the achilles injury better than other players who have had the injury.

With the achilles injury, you normally lose / reduce your ability to create separation. You end up taking more contested jump-shots. You get less easy attempts at the rim. A shooter of Durant's caliber was able to navigate this better.

Tatum is a not shooter of that caliber. He is closer to Kobe.

I think it is natural to freak out, but some of the reactions don't make sense. Some are saying a year and a half to fully recover? Really? It does somewhat depend on the severity, but common. I really think 10 months is a fair time table. NFL linebacker Terrell Suggs, was back to playing football in only 6 months!! Sure we fear the worst but we can all also hope for the best.

Either way if it's an Achilles he's out next year.  It will also give new ownership a valid reason to blow it up and reset.  Hopefully Dallas can't get giannis and they come after JB for the #1 pick.

What I am saying is, so many people are saying he will defiantly miss all of next year. No one knows that for sure, even if it is worst case scenario. He is young,

A Grade 1 -- Achilles tendon strain, a mild injury, usually recovers within 2-6 weeks

A Grade 4 Achilles tear, which is a complete rupture of the tendon, typically requires surgical repair and a recovery period of 6 to 12 months.

Sorry, just not true!!! it can be true but saying if it's an Achilles means he misses all of next year guaranteed is completely false!!! that is spreading misinformation! you don't know the severity yet if it is his achilles

As I said, I went through an achilles tear, mine was a full torn achilles. But, there are also Partial Achilles tears that are common. You can recover quicker from a partial Tear.
I find it odd no one is even talking about a Partial Achilles tear. I pray that is the case, of course I have no idea, but we won't know till the MRI

I was wondering if Tatum could come back in time for a playoff run next season.

Keep the team together. Thread water during the regular season. Then make a run once he returns.

He definitely could. Durant even admitted if the Nets were better that year he signed he could have just joined in April. COVID also came into play, but Durant was cleared in late March that season. The Nets weren't a playoff team that year.

Prime Danny Granger was the player I thought Tatum would end up as after his rookie year. He obviously exceeded that but I could see him settling in as that level of player if this is indeed an Achilles.
