Club option at $16.25M in the 9th season, then he becomes a FA when he is 31.  So it is really more like a $146M contract (per Spotrac).  Plus there is an additional $100M available through "escalators/incentives".  Not sure of the details of that but on the radio they said one of them was winning rookie of the year (which is probably unlikely).

There is risk on both sides of this.  The Sox are putting up a lot of money for a player who has 159 MLB at bats and only 2 HR.  I am glad they did it, I think it is a good bet.  For Anthony, he may be leaving money on the table but there is a lot that can go wrong between now and 2031 when he would otherwise become a FA.  The absolute worst case is that he makes $146M 2026-2034.  He will be 31 in 2034, so likely can get another big contract.  I think overall, this is smart for him also.

BREAKING: Outfielder Roman Anthony and the Boston Red Sox are finalizing an eight-year, $130 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. The deal, which is pending a physical, includes a club option and will keep Anthony under team control through 2034.

Yeah, having him at an AAV of $16.25 million in his prime will hopefully pay off big time.

Not sure why he'd do that deal, but glad he did.  I'm a believer.  Kid has had an amazing learning curve.  He's already fihgured out how to be a steady contributor. When that power kicks back in he'll be a huge boost.

I mean, that?s too much money to chance if you are Anthony. A bird in the hand as they say..

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Dustin May pitched his first game for the Red Sox tonight. 3 innings pitched and gave up 3 runs.  :blank:

Surprised there wasn't a compromise on # of year in the deal.
