Left-hander Patrick Sandoval and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a two-year, $18.25 million contract, sources told ESPN, uniting the veteran who was non-tendered in November with a team looking to shore up its pitching depth this year and beyond.

The 28-year-old Sandoval underwent Tommy John surgery in June and is not expected to pitch until the second half of 2025. Boston nevertheless paid a well-over-market rate to get Sandoval, cognizant of the heavy price of free agent starting pitchers this winter and hopeful that Sandoval can be a solid midrotation starter upon his return.

Last year:  2 Ws, 8 Ls, 5.08 ERA

Boston sticking to its recent policy of signing pitchers who won't pitch for a while.

And is this one of the "big-money free agents" they told Soto they'd be signing?

This team is a joke.

At this point I'd feel better about the Red Sox if they signed a big name free agent to what would 100% be an overpay than if they did nothing. Because at least that overpay would signal they are willing to act like a big market team again. Right now it feels like ownership is content just to field a mid eighties win team and make bank. Hope I'm wrong.

Red Sox record the last 6 seasons:
81-81
78-84
78-84
92-70
24-36* (65-97 rate over a full season)
84-78

That's 437 wins vs 433 losses in six years. Just the definition of perfectly mediocre. But at least ownership is making money.

Just a putrid signing. Reclamation project is one thing, but they paid double his market value at least. He literally just got released rather than go to arbitration and pay him maybe half of what Boston just gave him. IF it works out, they get a whopping 1.5 years.

The guy had a WIP of 1.5+ the last 2 years and has a major injury, I don't care what pitchers are making today that contract is setting money on fire.

Yeah I already know how this is gonna end. We'll end up bringing back Pivetta, and then signing a few stiffs in our lineup instead of the likes of Bregman/Santander/Teoscar. Then we'll say we trust our young guys to step it up and say we have "great depth" on the squad  ::)

All while remaining WELL UNDER the luxury tax. Pathetic.

The Red Sox signed Walker Buehler to a one year deal.

Between Buehler, Giolito and Sandoval, we'd have a dominant rotation if this was 2021.  I'm hoping that Buehler has something left.

Would have rather Burnes, but I'll take it.

If they can add Bregman or Teoscar, and then sign another reliever I think this will have been a great offseason honestly. At the very least, they *should* be able to contend and be a wild card team. The team has definitely improved and I'd like to think a few of the other young guys continue to grow/improve.

SPs: Crochet-Houck-Giolito-Bello-Buehler with Kutter/Priester/Fitts as depth.

RPs: Hendriks-Chapman-Whitlock-Slaten-Bernardino-Guerrero, maybe also Winck/Wilson

That's way better than previous seasons, and I'd love it more with another reliever addition to beef up the bullpen.

I don't want Teoscar Hernandez on the Sox. His defensive stats are hideous. And his career hitting numbers aren't that much better than Yoshida's. We're already gonna have Yoshida, Decers, and Casas platooning at DH. So we really need another DH?

If we're going to upgrade with a right-handed bat it needs to be someone who can play great defense. This would allow for these other guys to get more time at 1B/DH/whatever. Getting an elite 2-way player gives Cora infinitely more flexibility in assembling a proper lineup.

Bregman fits the bill but his age is certainly a major concern. It would be nice to get someone with some of their best years still ahead of them. To get that guy will likely require an expensive trade.

Which is why a guy like Soto went for such obscene money. Most FA's have serious flaws.

Yikes. Gerrit Cole will miss the 2025 season after needing TJS

Massive blow for NYY, and makes things interesting in the AL. I know they added Fried in the offseason but their rotation felt top-heavy with him and Cole and not much behind them (unless you're really high on Rodon).
