He doesn't look a day over 68....

Not to make it about me, but I like how Larry is always just a little older.

The Bird era was so good.  One story - when Bird was in his 20?s, about a year or two older than me and my friends, we?d occasionally have sightings. He went to bars we went to and he lived on a fairly main road in Newton/Brookline that we often drove down.  One night very very late my friends (I wasn?t with them) saw a light on in his garage and saw him tinkering with his car - garage door open.  Jerks and drunk as they were, my buddies thought it was a good idea to stop and introduce themselves. Walked right up to the garage and said they just wanted to say hello and shake your hand. Larry, understandably  was not accommodating and appeared to be nervous.   The visit was short and pretty silent on his part. Not sure if they regret it or are proud of it now. I thought it not a wise or nice thing to do but can say at the time they were pretty pleased with themselves.

Larry once said that he didn't expect to have a long life because he thought taller, larger men did not generally have long life spans.
Not sure if there is any truth to that (I am 6-7), but Larry seems to be going along just fine.
Helps that he has taken pretty good care of himself and has led what appears to be a contented life as an adult after a tumultuous childhood.
He has had financial security and I'll bet Dinah, his wife, has helped his general happiness. Good for him.

Of all the "heroes" I've had in my 68 years, Larry seems to have held up pretty well.  He appears to be a good person and has always had me feeling good about looking up to him.  I just wish he had more to do with the C's these days.  Every time all the old C's show up for some kind of a celebration, I always wonder why Larry isn't there.  I miss him.

From what I understand, when he's done with something, he doesn't look back.  My guess, he'd had enough with the Celtics (I don't think he really liked his role with them) and moved on to the opportunity in Indy.

I believe Rick Pitino told him not to come around and he never came back.

Seems like there should be a coordinated effort to try to get him back in the fold.

I think he's done in Boston.

It's obvious, after all these years, that he doesn't want to come back.  But, if I had a chance to personally ask Mr. Bird, I'd tell him he should do it for us fans.  It's always a special joy to see the old-timers sitting courtside or being honored and recognized in one way or the other.  For God-sakes man, it's a Celtic Tradition to see old-timers at games.  And I'd also might mention that he's being childish and selfish.  I always thought Larry was a bigger man.  Maybe not.

Ainge had that story.  Would've had the Celtics trading McHale to Dallas for Schrempf & Perkins. 1988ish.

I think the story of a Bird trade revolved around Chuck Person.  I would've made the Mchale trade but not the Bird one - and it has nothing to do with loyalty.  Quite simply, I think you have a better chance of getting another title with Bird (even though he was of course much older) than Person.  But the idea of Bird, Schempf and Perkins playing together would be tempting.
