Didn't mean to scare people by bumping this thread, but I thought it was the right place to continue the discussion of his return and the status of his play.
My exact words were "He has been good, but not at the top of his game". I feel like people are disagreeing with me and then saying exactly the same thing with different words like "could have a little rust", "a bit rusty". Rusty implies to me his shot or timing is a little off. And that seems to be the case. 46% overall and 33% from 3, down from 52% and 38% last season. Small sample size this season (6 games) so one good or bad game can distort this. FGA attempts are up from 13 last season to 15 and 3PA up from 5 to 7 this season but his scoring is about the same. He is taking more shots to get the same amount of points. All of this (except the increase in FGA) is perfectly expected and not concerning to me.
To me though, he also does not seem to be moving as well. He seems to be laboring a little more than last season to move around the court, to get to his spot, to close for a block. Again, nothing unexpected or concerning after such a long layoff, just not Porzingis at his best. I expect steady improvement in both his shooting/timing and his overall strength/conditioning. In the meantime, if I was the coach, I would ask him to throttle back of FGA and 3PA through better shot selection. Get your points more efficiently, then ramp up as needed. And focus on, have more energy for, rebounding and defense. Whether he scores 17 or 22 in a Thursday game in December means nothing.
