Anyone know what all the protections are for the pick?  I saw top 13 protected for the first year but nothing else

Quote
Detroit's 1st round pick to New York protected for selections 1-13 in 2025, 1-11 in 2026 and 1-9 in 2027; if Detroit has not conveyed a 1st round pick to New York by 2027, then Detroit will instead convey its 2027 2nd round pick to New York (via Houston to Oklahoma City) [Detroit-Houston, 11/24/2020; Houston-Oklahoma City, 7/30/2021; New York-Oklahoma City, 6/23/2022]

Sounds like a 2027 2nd round pick; Detroit is unlikely to earn out of those 1st round protections.  Garbage pick.

The Knicks clearly improved on paper, with a stretch 5 who is pretty efficient with a mid 80s FT percentage and a career 40% 3 point shooter.  Just have to wonder if Towns can fit into the culture there, where they play hard all 48 minutes.  Also his rebounding numbers have declined through the years, although the Knicks are pretty much a gang rebounding team, so that may not matter that much.  I guess it moves Robinson to back up role when he returns. KAT is only 28.

Not gonna lie, I think the Knicks got better.  Will be interesting to see how we match up against the Knicks, especially when both are at full strength (i.e. when KP returns).

Still love the Celtics, though.

I agree that KAT is talented.  It was a net win for the NYK if KAT can fit into the team and culture.   But my impression of KAT is he is a bit immature, plays emotional and dumb sometimes.  He isn't a give 100% effort all the time player.  If he didn't want to be traded, it may take a while for him to get his head straight and find his fit in NY.

That looks like a second round pick then...

Yeah.  I can see putting down a bet at 4:1.  They're a very talented team.  But "heavy favorites" is a bridge way too far.

If I had to rank the entire field now (just up to #7):

1. Boston
2. OKC
3. New York
4. Minnesota
5. Dallas
6. Philadelphia
7. Denver

Boston vs. New York ECF (C's in 6), then Boston vs. OKC Finals (C's in 6 but very close...)

The Knicks traded a top 5 knucklehead for one of the few guys in the league that?s more of a Knucklehead than him lol. Townes is a loser and has a huge contract. Highest paid Knick. The second it goes wrong he?s gonna get booed out of msg. He can?t handle that. I give it to December.  The Celtics front office has to be laughing.

You can?t predict these things for sure but what a no brainer deal for NY. I think Thibs has convinced himself he can get the most out of KAT. I won?t be surprised if he does.
They are absolutely dangerous to the Celtics. I agree with those that said Hart is a ? dodgy? shooter . But he?d be fantastic off the bench. I think the Knicks will mortgage any future to upgrade more at the 2. But I?m not sure if their assets.
Don?t get me wrong. The Celtics healthy would still need to consistently NOT execute and fall into bad habits to lose a 7 gsme series to this team. But they?re very good.
I?m glad to see Minny make such a bad deal. Randle is gonna stagnate that group. I find that team very unlikeable between Ant?s ego , Gobert?s undeserved defensive awards , and recereees gifting then the Denver series by letting Minny hold on the perimeter letting slow KAT and Gobert get in position where they eoukd have been late rotating. They were given two games in that series. 1 was absurd. Denver wasn?t allowed to move.
I haven?t seen  a player crowned the next thing when there are way more guys to talk about. One being our own Jaylen Brown.
Offense is more important I know but Ant talked and talked and was useless stating in front of both Kyrie and Luka. Jaylen made the gsme incredibly hard for both of those players 94 feet.
I welcome the challenge as a Celtics nut. Bring it on. The Celts ( if they are lucky enough to be pretty much fully healthy at the right time can defeat sone great teams and (in my mind) be considered one of the best teams in history up there with the best of the Spurs teams.

Anyone claiming the Knicks got worse are just homers?I look it as a high risk/high reward for the Knicks?could backfire but also has a chance at making them elite. Time will tell.

I am not sure it is a Knicks upgrade. The direct Randle for Towns swap is an upgrade but DiVincenzo is a significant loss.

If the Knicks play big with the twin towers, their bench will look like this:

G: M McBride
G: Shamet
F: Josh Hart
F: J Sims
C: P Achiuwa

Others: T Kolek, Cam Payne, Dadiet

Josh Hart is the only above average bench player there. McBride is middle of the pack. The other three positions are all well below average. That will be one of the weaker benches in the league.

I wonder if they end up using a small backcourt with Brunson and McBride more often in order to get more shooting on the floor.

DiVincenzo was really good for the Knicks last year. 15.5ppg in the regular season as 3rd option. 17.8ppg in the playoffs as the 2nd option. He was taking 8.7 threes per game. 3rd in the NBA in attempts and 3rd in makes. Shot 40% in regular season and 42.5% in the playoffs. By far the best three point threat on the Knicks.

I liked him a lot on the Knicks in their expected small ball lineups next season alongside Brunson, M Bridges (SF) and Anunoby (PF). The shooting threat those four would provide was a huge weapon.

I'm interested to see how he handles the NY media. He dealt with some drama in Minnesota for some years when Butler called him and Wiggins out as well as when he was labeled soft after the Grizzlies playoff series. Now will he be able to handle potential backlash in NY when things go awry?

I agree.  I have watched DD get better and better every year and I wish we had him.   He was absolutely a key player for NY last year.   I think people are sleeping on how much he contributed to the knicks last year.

I think things like this matter less than most members of the media make it seem - especially when anyone can get directly in contact with players via Twitter and social media.

Very interesting trade.  My conclusion is that it will be good for both teams.  For NYK, I think Towns is an improvement over Randle, not huge, but a better fit.  NYK has built their team around smaller players, Anunoby, Bridges, but with Randle as their primary big, they end up a little small.  Towns gives them more size without sacrificing scoring.  To me, Towns is a better fit for a team that will probably be playing with only 1 true big (like the Celtics).  If you are going to play with one big and then guards and wings, Towns is better to be that one big.

For MIN, it is just the opposite.  Randle is a much better match to play alongside Gobert.  I consider Randle a true big but he is definitely more PF and maybe even a swing.  Gobert and Towns were just too big, not a good fit.  MIN will have Jaden McDaniels playing as their wing.  They will get plenty of scoring from Randle and Edwards so McDaniels doesn't need to score a lot, but that may be a weakness for them.  Gobert doesn't score, and having one non-scorer is not ideal but having two starts to impact balance.

The Knicks are going to be an interesting team when they match up against BOS

Holiday           Brunson
White             Hart
Brown            Bridges
Tatum            Anunoby
Porzingis        Towns

Same basic structure, 2 guards, 2 wings, and 1 scoring 7-footer.  In Brunson, they have a more traditional scoring PG who is the primary offensive initiator, with Hart, a traditional SG, where the Celtics play two classic combo guards, not really either while able to play both at a high level.
