Here are the current odds to win MVP.  Books vary some, I have seen some that have Tatum below Wembanyama.  Tatum probably is not going to win MVP and probably won't deserve to win it, but I think he is underappreciated in general.

Nikola Jokic                         +350
Luka Doncic                         +370
Joel Embiid                          +600
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander       +600
Giannis Antetokounmpo        +650
Anthony Edwards                +1200
Jayson Tatum                     +1800
Jalen Brunson                     +1800
Victor Wembanyama            +2200
Stephen Curry                    +5000
Ja Morant                           +5000

I guess the answer is what team he's on, but I would have Wemby higher on the odds. If he can continue to stay healthy and get the playing time up a little more, he's basically a walking 27/15 kind of player (he was already averaging 21/11 last year). CP3 and Barnes should help give that team veteran presences, and I feel they could be a play-in team this season.

I'd be very happy with 30-9-6 with 40% from 3, very good defense, and efficient play.  Whether that translates to MVP makes no difference to me(I'm sure he would like it), but it certainly gets him in the conversation, and the C's in the hunt for the trophy.

Honestly, I think I would almost be happier if he averages less points than that.

If he can average 27/9/6 while shooting in the realm of 47-49% FG, 38%-40% 3PT and 83%-86% FT and playing high level defence while the team continues do dominate and hold a strong #1 seed, then I will have nothing at all to complain about.

If Tatum's scoring is down, his offensive efficiency is up, and the team is thriving...then all that tells me is that he's making better decisions, being a strong leader, and doing a good job of being the 'glue' of the team and making everybody else better.   I can't possibly ask for anything more from him then that.

He averaged 27 ppg last year. If he does that again this season but can increase his efficiency even more and add another assist per game, that might be enough of a step forward to get him into that top 3 MVP conversation with good defense and a top record.

Game 1 for Tatum: 37pts, 10ast, 4rebs, 1stl, 1blk in 30 mins of play. 14-18 from the field, 8-11 from 3pt. Not too shabby.  ;)

His shot looked flawless. Those 3's were a thing a beauty.

He looked a lot smoother tonight than he has the last couple of years. And those 10 assists were effortless. If he maintains everything else but adds an extra assist per night he'll be in MVP conversation.

MVP who know. They?ve turned it into such a dumb award. But I?d guess he WILL have his best year.
