So much fun watching the draft tonite with all the talk about what teams need to do to compete with the Celtics.
All the commentators going on and on about our defense and length that is so difficult for others to replicate.
I also loved hearing them once again call the Boston Celtics the greatest franchise in the NBA !!!!
So happy to be Top Dog again.
I agree about the summaries of team needs as compared to the Celtics. This will be the third time in two days that I post, It is a copy-cat league. Other teams will always try to emulate the champs (Celtics) but you cannot replicate their top-end talent so they are trying to copy the perimeter defense: OKC getting Caruso when they already have Dort, NYK getting Bridges when they already have OG.
I don't think OKC are copying BOS. Nor are NYK. I wrote a post about NYK not copying BOS yesterday. So I'll link that rather than repeat my reasons for saying so.
https://forum.celticsstrong.com/index.php?topic=108985.msg3264911#msg3264911For OKC,
OKC's plan is not new to them. They have been on this path for last two years. Not exactly the same path as BOS but some similarities in terms of big ball-handlers and one perimeter orientated big man. A five out offense.
OKC drafted a similar type of player as Caruso in the draft last year in Cason Wallace. Another big defensive guard. One with more explosive scoring potential although we haven't seen that yet in the NBA. So Caruso is not new. It is continuing a path they were already on.
They were building a 4 wing 1 big team last year. A bit different than BOS 2 guard 2 forward 1 big team. They had two big ball-handling wings in Giddey and SGA. Two wings in Dort and J-Dub.
Even now Dort and Caruso are not similar to any BOS players. BOS has no one-way defensive guard. Or defensive 3+D wing. We have two way complete combo guards in D White and Jrue Holiday. We have versatile forwards in Jaylen & Tatum and an offensive orienated sharpshooter in Hauser.
Presti has always gone after defensive role players. It was something Durant cited as a reason he wanted to go to GSW. He was sick of having guys who weren't shooters or passers. The lack of team offense. The reliance on him & Westbrook to play one-on-one. Targeting guys like Caruso and Dort is something Presti has done throughout his time in OKC. Sefolosha, A Roberson, Perk, S Adams, Ibaka. What they hoped R Jackson would be as a big defensive guard behind Westbrook.
