Kornet's main job will be to keep Lively or Gafford off the boards.  They don't have a big who can score like Mobely or Turner. Offensively he'll be a pick and roll guy. So you lose a 3 point shooter without Porzingis, which means they'll have 4 guys out there who can make 3's vs 5.

Also keep in mind that he's playing bench minutes. He won't be out there with the game on the line. The only times all season where Kornet has been a liability is vs the top 4's or 5's who are scorers. And earlier in the playoffs he contributed enough offensively to offset whatever defensive problems he had.

Can someone explain this injury though? I still haven?t seen how serious it is or if it?s something that can be played on or not.

Even from Doctors.

I mean apparently he played the 3rd and some of the 4th with this injury? And seems to be walking around fine.

The woj post seems to indicate the medical staff will let him play.

From that medical article, it sounds like it's something that is often misdiagnosed.  Cited patients had lived with it for as much as nine months.  It's an injury that doesn't seem to get better on its own or with non-surgical treatments.

Can he play over the next couple of games? From what I've read, it's a risk, as it is possible that it would lead to more severe injury. But, if Porzingis can tolerate the pain and is willing to take that risk, who knows?

Remember when Kevin McHale was able to tolerate the pain and played on that injured foot?  The med staff said there would be no long term damage - it was just a matter if he could take the pain.

The C's fired their team doctor that summer and McHale was never the same player.

Upon more reflection, I?m betting Joe used the term ?serious? to mean in terms of it being real/not fake instead of in a severity sense. It just may be an injury that he can play through. That makes more sense with all of the other information.

But, golly, Tatum is going to have to pop out of his shooting slump if there?s no KP. It?d be a good time to repeat a 2022 Game 6 in Milwaukee.

That medical article linked above mentioned surgery being necessary, so I'm not as confident as you are:

Quote
. Conservative treatment is uniformly unsuccessful in the literature. Surgical stabilization by relocating the tendon and repairing or reconstructing the flexor retinaculum, with or without groove deepening, has been shown to be highly successful, with most patients returning to their pre-injury level of function.

Not saying you're wrong or not, but many injuries require surgery to fix that can be played through.

We'll know more tomorrow at game time.

Yeah.  If I'm KP, I get a second and third opinion. As we have seen recently with IT4 and Timelord, playing through pain in the playoffs isn't always worth it.

Porzingis is just built different. He twists his left ankle and injured his right calf, and now he?s twisted his right ankle and injured his left lower leg.

Must be something to do with being over 7ft tall and skinny? Shrug?

It will be interesting to see how well Wembanyama and Holmgren hold up against NBA players for 80+ game seasons with similar builds. Holmgren has already missed a season after slipping on a wet court.

On the other hand, it's the Finals... and this may be your only opportunity in your whole career. Sure, he may lose out in future contracts if it all goes wrong, but once his current contract finishes he would've made about $245m in his career, so he's not hurting for money.

All that said, for sure he should get second and third opinion. I would never trust a team doctor, not that they're good or bad, but you never know if their loyalties lie with the patient or the organization. But that's my paranoia at work.

Interesting breakdown from one of those twitter sports doctors. He seems to think he can play on it

Put him on minute restrictions or rest him Game 3. If we lose G3 then he needs to provide some boards and rim protection Game 4.

Get him his surgery once series is over. His Olympics days (at least for this summer) are over.

The key injury hitting us at the right time as always lol

I expect they do not play him in game 3 to steal several more days of rest and rehab. Allows them to see exactly what they have without him in game 3 and then get him back for game 4.

If you win without him you buy yourself time

What I heard this guy say was that the risk of this manifesting into a more serious injury was low in his opinion, but there is risk.

My prediction is that he will play, but they won't say for sure until game time (to keep DAL guessing) but that he is going to be gimpy.
