@VG

According to mlb.com, 6 of out of our top 13 prospects are middle infielders.

Felger and Mazz actually made a great point the other day (no, seriously), that Dombrowski actually drafted a lot of our current roster players and blue chip prospects.

This is despite trading away loads of good prospects. But the guys he dumped almost all turned into busts. He kept the right guys and traded the bums with bordeine clairvoyabt accuracy. Can Breslow do the same and inject some elite veteran talent into this roster while not mortgaging the future?

With all those middle infield prospects we should have some real flexibility for trades.

That is what I was trying to say.  The list indicates 4 SS prospects at the top of the list in addition to Mayer.  Even if they don't turn out to be busts, it is still OK to sometimes trade prospects to help the team in the near term.

Mindful of their limited rotation depth, the Red Sox made a move Friday to bolster their starting pitching in anticipation of a playoff push.

The Red Sox swung a trade with the Dodgers to bring back lefthanded starter James Paxton.

Paxton, 35, is 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA for the Dodgers this year, with a 16 percent strikeout rate and 12 percent walk rate.

In his most recent outing against the Red Sox last Sunday, Paxton impressed, touching 95-96 m.p.h. in his fifth and final inning. He struck out seven, walked four, and allowed three runs. The Dodgers nonetheless designated him for assignment Monday to clear a spot in their rotation for Clayton Kershaw.

So why did we trade for Danny Jansen?

Need a win tonight. The bullpen has blown a staggering number of leads since the all-star break. We desperately need another arm or two. And a quality right-handed bat, of course.

Barring a miracle we're not winning the WS this year. But it would be nice to get these guys some playoff experience to build on.

The Red Sox acquired right-hander Quinn Priester from the Pirates in exchange for infield prospect Nick Yorke (Boston's No. 6 prospect) on Monday.

Priester, 23, has a 6.46 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 94 2/3 innings in the Majors with the Pirates. He ranked among Pittsburgh's top five prospects as recently as 2023, and he has a 3.41 ERA with 380 strikeouts in 366 1/3 Minor League innings.

We traded a top six prospect for a reclamation project?

If it's meant to be a win-now move it's a terrible trade, but if the idea is balancing out our prospect positions then I see the logic behind it. Give Priester more time to work on his pitches in AAA with occasional call ups when we need a spot start and maybe he'll figure things out. He was a top pitching prospect and is still young.

It does nothing to solve our bullpen issues, though.
I'm bitter.

They still definitely need to add to the bullpen. But I don't mind the Priester trade. Tbh Yorke really hasn't amounted to much and there was gonna be a logjam in the infield already with Casas here and then Mayer + Anthony coming up, etc. And it's not likely he would have remained here given Rule 5 and other things.

I liked the Paxton move. They definitely need a high leverage reliever though with Jansen scuffling a bit and Martin probably out for some time, if not the season.

The Danny Jansen trade to me though was really weird and confusing. Still don't get it.

Last year his ERA was 7.74 and this year it?s 4.84, with his walk rate nearly cut in half.  I?d say he?s already on the path to reclaiming himself.  Not an amazing pitcher, but likely better than his brief major league career numbers indicate.  A mid-rotation guy.

I think the Sox at least tried to sell high on Yorke. He's on a hot streak right now, but he looks like a corner-outfielder-to-be without enough bat to be a good starter. Teel, Mayer, Anthony are all far superior 2-way prospects, and then there are maybe 3-4 MORE infielders that have surpassed Yorke in the system. Throw in Hamilton getting time at 2B and he does seem very unlikely to impact the big league club.

That said, you always want value when you trade anyone. Seems about equal, except we're getting a pitcher back. He's struggled at the MLB level but has been at least as good in the minors as Yorke. Maybe PIT rushed him. Not a win or a loss so much as minor adjustments.

The Sox are currently 2 games out of the Wild Card, and ahead of Houston, TB, Texas, and Toronto. I'm content, as long as these prospects like Mayer and Anthony develop.

The Boston Red Sox and Major League Baseball suspended outfielder Jarren Duran for two games Monday after he uttered an anti-gay slur at a fan during the team's loss Sunday to the Houston Astros.

In the sixth inning of Boston's game Sunday at Fenway Park, Duran turned around in the middle of an at-bat and said to a heckler: "Shut up, you f---ing f----t."

I wish MLB came down harder on hate speech.

I agree. Is one week an appropriate suspension?

Some people are horrified by the use of this word, while others still freely use it. I would think you'd get some resistance from those that want to use that word and don't think they are being hateful. 2024 is wild.

In 1990, I might understand someone not appreciating that it was hate speech.  In 2024, I think there's been plenty of time for people to learn and adjust.
