That kid can do some special stuff on the defensive end.

I don't understand how the Sixers looked at their roster and said "what we need is less defense, hustle and grittiness".

I think they are clearing money for next year.

Fairly sure they could have dumped him on draft night easily enough, or in July if they signed a guy.  I think Morey screwed this one up.  21 year-old finally has a chance to play because of injuries, shows elite defensive abilities, and promptly trades him instead of letting him get the playing time needed to gain some more consistency on offense.

Hopefully the Celtics get back into the habit of blowing teams out so Springer can get 10 minutes a game in the 4th quarter.  Looking forward to seeing him dominate game 82 like Pritchard did last year.
Unless they're quietly cashing in on this season because they don't think Embiid is coming back.

Sure, but even then, might as well give Springer some real run to see what happens.  It’s not like the pick they get in the 40s in an iffy draft is anything special.  (Although if embiid isn’t coming back, the Hield trade makes zero sense).

Jordan Walsh and Jaden Springer could be defensive gems in the future.

Excluding the highly protected 2027 Second Round pick we probably won't get from POR, the net of the trade deadline is:

Celtics get:
Tillman
Springer

Celtics give:
Stevens
Banton
Seconds in 2024, 2027, 2030
Upgraded two bench positions and used some excess 2nd rounders. Well done, Brad.

I think the Tillman addition is also a potential long term plan by Brad Stevens, more so the "Horford replacement". Both guys are similar builds. Tillman is 2 inches shorter but he's obviously younger and has a higher wingspan.

I like the idea of Tillman, Queta and Kornet being our frontcourt depth beyond 2025 with Porzingis of course as the lead dog in that group. Yes, Queta is not likely to be a major contributor for our postseason run this season, but he's still raw/developing. Maybe it's hopeful projection on my part, but I think with some more experience and 1-2 full offseasons, Queta can develop into a very solid role player/fringe starter. He has the tools, size and toughness to make it in this league.

Look at Hauser. Two years ago many just thought he was another "bum" but after playing a handful of games, and a few full offseasons of work/training, he's turned into a very useful role player for us.

I'm admittedly not a huge Kornet guy but if he's your 4th big, you're more than fine. I think Horford has two years maximum left after this season concludes, so the hope is probably the "next wave" (Tillman  + Queta) can grow into solid players in the frontcourt,  and they will be cheap for the meantime which is good for luxury tax purposes. And of course Porzingis is our main big for years to come.

He’s been compared to Avery Bradley but he really reminds me of a young Marcus Smart!

Never wanted Gallo here. Tunnel vision. If he hasn’t had a shot attempt in a while he’ll take a bad one. He has even less lift now, too.

It seems Harry Giles has been waived as well. He has a lot of fans here (me included) but i’d rather go for Gallo. Sadly Giles doesn’t look like an NBA player anymore. Maybe he should do the Jabari Parker route.

I’d rather he not go to Miami. Although there might be some motivation there.

If he never got injured, he might have been a reasonable offensive role to what Zinger is now. Zinger is better, but Gallo back then could take smaller guys into the post and stretch the floor.

I haven't watched him play this year at all. I do still wonder if he could fulfill that role down the stretch of the season to give Zinger more rest.

Overall I was pretty shocked to see the Lakers make zero moves. Maybe part of the calculus was Reaves + D'Lo playing great ball in recent weeks and D'Lo in particular was one of their better trade chips in a package. But it could also be they just plan to ride it out and realistically don't really think they can make a run. Plan to make a splash in the offseason for a 3rd star. The West is a lot more fierce this year.

They plan to add via the buyout market according to reports. I’ve seen them linked to Gallo and Dinwiddie.
