I am listening to a podcast / interview with Sherrod Blakeney and Gary Washburn from yesterday talking about the Jaylen situation.
Gary Washburn thought this would be a major black eye for Celtics organization if they traded away Jaylen Brown. With everything Jaylen has done for the team over 10 years, to trade him now would be remembered as a black mark against the team for years to come.
I mean they traded away Pierce, Smart, KG and those guys did a ton for the organization. This is about business and the Celtics do not want 2 max contracts that continue to balloon with every extension.
I agree. I don't think it's a black eye at all. First of all, we have no idea about conversations that have been had behind closed doors. This is easily explained if Brad and Jaylen have been talking and Jaylen is open to being traded or prefers being traded. How would that be a black eye if there is mutual interest in a trade? And even without that, Brad may be doing what is best for the organization in the long run. And by long run, it may be 2-3 years down the road, not ten. C's have a number of teams ahead of them at the moment who are only getting better - especially OKC and SA. The team might be focused on the money because they see loosening of the payroll as the only pathway toward winning a championship.
I disagree. I think it will be remembered in 10 years, in 20 years, maybe in 30s years.
Jaylen is different to Pierce and KG because Jaylen is in his prime. Those guys weren't. Marcus Smart is not comparable because he is nowhere near the talent of Jaylen. He did not just finish 6th in MVP voting. He was not 2nd Team All-NBA. He did not have several All-Star selections.
This is a different type of trade. It is one thing to get back a top talent like Giannis but if you are not bringing back a top talent ... if you are dumping Jaylen in a rebuilding trade ...
This is the type of deal that could bite not just for years to come but for decades to come. The deal people talk about as ruining a Franchise.
