Actually, I misread this, Tonje is a 10-Day contract also. That gives them more flexibility along the way if a more useful vet becomes available and is willing play the 10-day contract game.  There is not that much cost difference between a prorated rookie deal and a series of 10-day contracts to get to the end of the season.

I will have to see what the contract values are for these 10-day deals and plug them into my spread sheet.  Tonje may be just a place holder for now with the team hoping a more useful vet can be signed either to a 10-day or prorated vet min later in what is left of the season.  Banton at least has some actual NBA experience (218 games).

The math is this:

Banton and Tonje for 10 days
12-man roster for 14 days
Mystery vet for 10 days or rest of season and Shulga for rest of season.
Fill 15th slot on last day of the year.  Have roughly $8k of space.
That's cutting it thinner than Goodfellas garlic

So its probably going to go something like....

Tonje and Banton for 10 days.
Two open roster spots for next 14 days.
Shulga and one vet min for rest of season.
Ron Harper Jr (or a different vet) last day of regular season.

And they'll end up about $8,600 below the tax. It's kind of beautiful in a nerdy spreadsheet sort of way.

They'll go into the offseason with 11 players under contract and 21.5 million under the tax. Vucevic will be an UFA and they'll have a first rounder (likely in the 23-27 range) and a second rounder (likely in the 38-42 range). They will have a 27.7 million dollar TPE and/or the ability to use the full non-tax MLE (starting at around 15 million).

Here's one 10 day.

Quote
Keith Smith
@KeithSmithNBA
The Boston Celtics are signing Dalano Banton to a 10 Day contract, according to
@MikeAScotto
.

Broke down in depth how Boston is going to handle the remainder of the season for their roster with
@John_Karalis
 on Locked On Celtics last night!

I missed the loophole where the Celtics can go multiple periods of below 14 players, so after this 10-day contract for Banton is up, they can hold at 13 (EDIT: Meant 14, but didn?t see typo until it was quoted below) for two more weeks and add the second of their 2-ways.  They can also, if they choose, sign one of their 2-ways to a 10-day today, and let that contract expire on Feb 28 as well as Banton, which would let the sign a vet to a rest-of-season deal on March 14, in addition to the other non-Harper 2-way to minimum contract, and still stay under the tax by the smallest of margins, with room to add a 15th player on the very last day of the year.

I believe the max they can go under 14 players is 28 days in aggregate (and not more than 14 days straight).
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

And given how good this front office is at planning, I'm guessing Zarren and his nerds had scenarios for every possible player they were looking to trade Anferno for, IF they fell into that salary threshold that would allow them to use the KP TPE and end up with an opportunity to sneak below the cap, ready at the start of the season  :laugh:
