Just trying to follow along.  We started with 14 roster slots signed plus (3) 2-way slots.

BOS subtracted:

Simons, Boucher, Minott, and Tillman   (-4)

Added:

Vucevic, Williams    (+2)

I believe that this gets BOS to exactly $842,292 under the tax with 12 roster players, correct?  Harper could get elevated, and assuming his salary hit would be the same as Williams ($490,128), that gets to $352,164 under with 13 contracts.  Is there any realistic way that the 14th slot could be filled and stay under the tax threshold?  I guess waiting the full 2 weeks for both Harper and whoever ends up being #14 would reduce the prorated portion some, is that enough to do it?

I believe that the tax line is $187,895,000.  The first apron is $195,955,000.  We probably have to stay below the First Apron if we sign someone's buyout, but we are not restricted based on what they earned before, correct?  So we could go after a bigger name buy out (assuming they accept a prorated min contract) but that would put us back over the tax for sure.  It seems to me that we end up back over the tax no matter what.  I don't see that as the end of the world (to be a tax payer this season) as unless we can go back under sometime in the next couple of seasons, BOS is still a repeater, I believe.

Harper has multiple seasons of NBA experience, so he would count for the prorated two year vet minimum.

Do you know what that means in terms of a specific number for this season?  Is it more or less that the hit of $490,128 for Amari Williams?  It would be a hair more, correct?

It's more.  Closer to $800k+

Yeah.  I think they will be able to sign him for the last day of the regular season to make him playoff eligible, but the Celtics are going to be that close to the tax line even that it is not a given.

My guess is that Zarren and company have this worked out to the dollar and we'll definitely fit beneath the tax.  Otherwise, we wouldn't have been sending out as much cash as we did. And I think your instincts are correct about Harper.

Oh yeah for sure we will be under.  They are privy to some details I am not.  My only question is how many days of a pro-rated minimum under.  It will not be many.

Jay King: Nikola Vucevic said he?s very excited to join the Celtics. He said he told Joe Mazzulla he totally understands that his role will be different than what it has been in his career. Suggested he expects to come off the bench tonight.

By my math if they wait 14 days to sign Shugla/Tonje then those two combined would cost around 760,000 K for the rest of the season. That would leave just about 80K to sign Harper, about what the last 5-6 days or so of the regular season would cost.

Its so close.

I knew he was Ron Harper's son (the name kind of gave it away  :police:) but I didn't realize that Dylan Harper was his brother.

Shams Charania: Malika, sources tell me Jayson Tatum has started controlled five-on-five scrimmaging with coaches. He has aggressively attacked his rehab at every turn. And listen, there's more boxes for Jayson Tatum to check. There's more phases in his rehab. He's got to practice with the team, of course. And then again, there's also the normal nerve, coming back from an injury of this magnitude, a torn Achilles in May to a really good team that has aspirations for potentially advancing in the playoffs. And Jayson Tatum has made clear to people around him, from my understanding, that he wants to come back as close to Jayson Tatum as Jayson Tatum as possible, not a shell of himself, not a lesser percentage of himself. And the other side of all that is the Celtics medical staff will have to clear him 100% before he can return, and he himself will have to feel 100% confidence and trust in that leg before he makes a potential return this season.

This feels like a non-update type of update.

For the record, this is a commentary on Shams and not your post!

I mean, the fact that JT is scrimmaging, even with coaches seems like a positive update at this point. He?s still moving in the right direction and there haven?t been any setbacks per Brad and Joe.

Unfortunately Shams does more of these nothingburger type updates than Woj did...I guess because he has a regular slot on Inside the NBA he has to come up with material every day for them.

Yeah, the only thing we've seen of Tatum before this is light shooting workouts alone and with a coach. The fact that he has progressed to [controlled] 5-on-5 seems like a big update. Brad said that he needed to go through a series of progressions before he could come back and this was one of them that he specified. Still has several steps to go, but going from shooting and dribbling in the half court to actually playing in full-court scrimmages is encouraging news.

I agree. He?s scrimmaging. Not sure how people are viewing that as a non-update.
