Just me sitting here waiting for the Celtics' trades to become official...
The longer the wait the better, because a) it means more time for another move to be made and wrapped into these deals, and b) even if no other deal is made, the longer into next offseason the trade exceptions created by this deal last, most notably the $22.5 million TPE for KP.
Good point. That TPE is the one thing that gives me hope about the mini-rebuild to come.
Yes. And if the Blazers have an additional deal they work out, it?s possible we could rope that into the KO deal, so that we use KPs salary to take on Simons and Niang, and get a TPE for all of Holiday?s salary that would carry into next summer.
Thank you for understanding this.
Now in terms of using a trade exception is it as simple (ha) as being able to add that amount (or a portion of it) to a deal to make salaries work?
You can use it to absorb the salaries of one or more players, but you have to absorb the entire salary. Right now we are in line to receive a $22.5 million exception for the difference between KP and Niang, so we could next summer take on Jabari Smith at $21 million, but Nic Claxton at $23.1 million would be out of reach.
We could also use it for a free agent in a sign-and-trade, so we could sign someone for up to $22.5 million in year 1. But generally the amount we have available should be enough to fit the salary of a starting-caliber player.
