What Joe said about defense made sense. Why should a head coach have to tell his players to play defense? That would be like telling his players that they need to get the ball through the rim inorder to score.

Should Joe help the players figure out how to put the ball through the hoop?

If putting the ball through the hoop isn't working, should he adjust?  If players are coasting on that end, should he call out players?  Emphasize new schemes?

It's funny that you (and Joe) see NBA offense and defense as "score the ball" and "don't let them score the ball", with no other coaching emphasis required.

I'm just saying a head coach should never have to tell his players to put effort in on defense. However, a coach can teach player how to defend or come up with a scheme.

Perhaps, in theory, a coach shouldn't have to preach defense.  But, if the players aren't bringing effort and energy, it's on the coach to light a fire under them.  To act like that never occurred to him is, once again, a sign of a moron who doesn't take his job seriously.

Should Joe never emphasize FT shooting?  It's obvious.  Rebounding?  It's obvious.  Fast break points?  It's obvious.

I'm sorry, but I blame players for lack of effort. However, I would blame Joe for a bad defensive scheme. It's far too easy to blame a coach for anything that goes bad. At some point, the players have to take responsibility.

You can't blame a coach for lack of effort.

You can blame a coach if he sees lack of effort and does nothing about it.

Even if you take Mazzula's comments as being somewhat reasonable, they are only reasonable when things first start going wrong. Then a coach has to intercede and fix them. He has to see the defense isn't right, figure out what is wrong with it, and then correct it.

It can be reasonable to fail to emphasize defense as a first time head coach for the first few weeks / months but it is absolutely ridiculous that he wasn't able to figure out this flaw over the long haul of his first season.

Tatum today:   https://x.com/NBCSCeltics/status/1708887487509123113?s=20

Regardless of what you think of his game or where he ranks among the league's top players, he's a superstar who actually wants to be in Boston and feels like its his home. Given what some of the other stars in the league are like, you have to appreciate him for this.

Kristaps Porzingis declares himself healthy: “Being here now, being healthy to start the season, it just gives me extra fire.” No limitations from the plantar fasciitis. “I’m perfectly fine.”

His plantar fascitis and how it is being handled worries me. Plantar fascitis doesn't just go away that quickly. It improves some and then it flares up again when you start working out or working out heavily on it again.

It seems very quick to me for Porzingis to be here at training camp and have no issues after having to sit out the international tournament.

It makes no sense to me. How could he have a problem serious enough to sit out that has healed so quickly? Plantar fascitis doesn't heal that quickly. It hangs around and hangs around making your life miserable.

I expect this will become a season long problem that he has to play through throughout the season until the end of the season. He will play in pain. He will be more limited in his mobility. And his performance will suffer.

KP said that shoes he was trying over the summer were really hurting his feet.  He went to different shoes and now he's feeling better.  It seems flimsy, but who knows?

I do a lot of long distance running and can totally vouch for this. I've had all-out PF in the past (in both feet) and I thought it would never go away. When I took a break from wearing Chucks (in my casual life) and I started taking my running shoes a little more seriously, the problem ended up going away and I have been PF-free for several years.

I really never took more than 1-2 weeks off from running when I did have pain, so months of rest was never necessary. I am 6'5" also - so while I'm not exactly Kristaps' height, I am considerably taller than the average human.

How much of that is the mohawk, though?

Haha - I'm no Fat Mike in the mohawk department, but I did have pretty legit liberty spikes when I was younger. It was fun having other teams think I was a freak on the basketball court. I still have flashbacks of people in the opposing stands chanting Kool-Aid at me.

I never know what to take seriously coming from Joe in interviews, so I default to 'nothing'.

I assume that he didn't literally forget to tell his guys to defend, and if he did, then he should have been fired into the sun long before he ever became head coach.  I do agree, however, that his media day snark did kill whatever buzz I had leftover from yesterday.  I like our roster but our coach scares the s*** out of me.

The thing with Joe is that his poor decision making actually hurts the team at times.  It isn’t like a more experienced coach where it is just neutral on how much he impacts the team.

It worries me that Joe can’t be just neutral and hit it out of the park on an easy day like media day.  Just say the right thing and not make dumb statements.

Kristaps said he had offers to make more money with other teams but chose to come to the Celtics. He just wants to win. Can’t wait for the first pre season game on Sunday.
