Mac Jones likely to get traded per reports

The only place I can potentially see him starting games is the Vikings if they let go of Cousins and don't add another legit QB. Maybe have Mac as a "bridge" to a younger guy like Penix/Nix/McCarthy if they go that route.

Otherwise, his best shot is just being a backup on a team like the Niners, Rams, Bucs or Falcons. Maybe a chance to compete at Tampa or Atlanta for a starting gig depending on what they do in FA + the draft.

Not sure how many more times I need to write this In the thread but pennix has been In college for more than a half decade and is not young. He is about 16 months younger than jones.

Okay but that doesn’t really disprove my point. I’m not sold Penix, Nix or McCarthy will start immediately for a team who drafts them. They might be sidelined for a bit behind some bridge QB

Both nix and pennix are 24 and almost definitely going to be career backups with a best case scenario of being a tyrrod Taylor type career. The idea of using mac jones as a bridge to one of them really doesn’t make any sense at all. It would barely even make sense for the actual prospect like maye or Daniels.

Why does Jayden Daniels get a free pass for having a five year college career, and is the same age (23) as Nix and Penix? For Nix (5 years) and Penix (6 years), that long college career seems to be a negative.

More people are moving Daniels to 2, and Maye is dropping to 3, in the Mock Drafts. It will be interesting to see what effect the combine/interviews have.  Mel Kiper has this in his latest mock draft, and Louis Riddick today said that Daniels is a much better prospect than Maye. He was kind of dismissive of Maye.

I feel like every time I hear a different talking head speak, there is a different view on the quarterbacks in this draft.  The group I heard on the radio driving home today had two hosts who would take Maye over Daniels OR Williams and one who would take Williams ahead of the others but doesn’t really love any of them.  I’ve heard every iteration possible of who is the better prospect of the three. And then there are those who like Penix, Nix and others.   And some want MHJ, others want a move down for added picks - grabbing OT and a non-MHJ WR early. And of course we’ve all heard the Justin Fields move.

Eventually someone is going to claim they nailed it and others will acknowledge (maybe) that they missed the boat.  It leaves your ignorant fan (like me) not having a clue about what to root for on draft night.

I'm pretty much where you are with this stuff, particularly given that drafting a QB with a high pick is one of the biggest crapshoots in all of pro sports. You could get Burrow, or you could get Leaf. Have fun playing Russian roulette, NFL teams! ;D

I think free agency, which starts March 13, will help answer the direction the Patriots take in the draft. I keep on reading paths the Patriots should take, where they draft a QB at 3, and sign a top free agent receiver. What free agent receiver would want to play with a rookie QB?

Any if you pay them.  The Cowboys won two straight Superbowl's in 93/94 and one of the top receivers (Alvin Harper) left the team(dynasty) to go play in Tampa of all places.  Why?  The Benjamin's were calling.

I'd bet if you threw some $$ Pittman's way, he'd come here!  I think Higgins will be franchised.  Evans, probably not, Samual and Boyd, pass, I think the play is Pittman, and re-sign Bourne.

That said, I'm also of the belief we make a big play for Baker instead of going rookie QB.  Baker, Pittman, Bourne, Douglas, Rhamondre, and a new TE and this offense starts clicking.  Thake that 3rd, trade back with ATL who probably wants a QB and take a Tackle.  Resign Owenu, and the line stabilizes too.

We already have a top five D, not much needs tweaking there.

They play their cards right, they could be in contention quicker than what many say!

I'm noticing a lot of mock drafts now seem to think Washington takes Jayden Daniels at #2, and the Pats take Drake Maye at #3. Feels like Daniels could make a leap and be the #2 pick. Also interesting to note, some seem to think McCarthy will rise in the Draft boards and go somewhere in the Top-15 maybe even over Penix.

I'd be pretty happy with Maye tbh. I see a lot of Justin Herbert in him and you can make it work obviously if you add a WR1 (Higgins/Ridley/Evans/Pittman), OT (which you can absolutely still nab in the 2nd round, maybe Patrick Paul or Guyton) and re-sign some of your own guys (Onwenu, Henry, Elliott, Bourne)

As electric as Daniels is, I am a bit worried that his frame is small + is a running QB really the way to go? Yes you need a QB that can run but Mahomes is capable of that too. QBs that can scramble and do  enough to extend plays is good enough today. It's just Mac Jones and Zappe were as slow as snails. Meanwhile Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen despite being elite dual-threat guys sometimes get exposed in the playoffs and come up short. Elite QBs and MVP players but again, whether fair or not they typically come up short. Jalen Hurts is similar and honestly he regressed this season after being in the SB a year ago, there may be a limit to how long that guy can last in the league too. Look at Cam Newton

Dual-threat or running QBs are the way to go now. If Zay Flowers was more disciplined and team don't choke, then the Ravens would be in the Superbowl and hoisting another one. Mahomes won with a banged up o-line too.

Hasn't McCarthy always been ahead of Penix?

Not from what I’m seeing. Some even have Nix over McCarthy

The general consensus seems to be that after Williams, Maye and Daniels, there’s a drop off and then it’s the next tier of McCarthy, Penix and Nix. Some teams do get desperate for a QB and take someone high and McCarthy might be that riser

But I was told that Williams and Maye were the consensus 1 and 2…  Not Daniels.  :P

This is the whole problem or risk of drafting QBs.  You just never know.  Of the 3 that are the consensus top picks, I predict that one will become a very good QB, one will be come an average borderline starter, and one will be a total bust.  So which one?  Is it better for the Pats that Maye slides to 3?  Who know?  The scouts don't know, that has been proven many times, so certainly fans don't know.

As to Caleb Williams, who can forget the 49ers trading up for Trey Lance, giving up 3 firsts.  I know they figured these would be late firsts but still.  What percentage would people put on it that Williams is a star, average, or bust?  I say:

40% Star
20% Average
40% Bust

And this is the QB with the best chance of being good.  At least the Pats are not in the position where they would have to sell the farm to move up.  All they need to do is use the pick.  But there is still huge risk.
