I want JD Davison on the team.

He is too talented not to call up. Pritchard needs to leave to create a clear role for Davison to play this season = 3rd string PG. So that is a win-win for Pritchard and for the Celtics. Pritchard wants more playing time elsewhere and Boston needs to move Pritchard in order to give the more talented Davison a role.

Davison could be the long term starting PG further down the road. For next season, 3rd string is enough. See how he does with that and move forward from there.

I agree with the original post/poster.

One of the things this team really struggles with is a PG that has blow by speed to get into the paint and break the defense down and then perhaps more importantly, make the right read for the pass or shot once there.

We have to work so hard to get a hood shot. A great point guard creates easy looks for the best shooters - completely changes the game.

Smart, White, Brogdon, Tatum, Pritchard and Brown? The only guy who has blow by speed there is Brown and he has marginal ball handling skills and poor decision making once he gets by his man. Not his fault - he’s not a PG.

The fact that Barlow said Davison has excelled at that very thing, was in the top five in assist in the G-League in assists, has a decent assist to turnover ratio and lead Maine to the highest offensive rating Carrie’s some weight.

I’m not saying Davison should start (by any stretch of the imagination) but I’d give him some minutes. He’s explosive in the open court and I’d let him take his Lumos in the half court.

If he can handle the speed of the game and make good decisions he’d have a field day with the Williams, Porzingis, Tatum, Brown lineup - any half decent drive and dish point would.

He’s the best blow by, drive and fish guy we have the roster. Time to get him some minutes - maybe 5-10 a game, more if he warrants it.

His biggest issues will be shooting and defense. He has the body to be good enough in D - might as well let him take his lumps.

His shooting probably comes along in time - especially if he’s already sniffing 80% from the line in the G- League…

Needs to stop taking 18 seconds off the clock by dribbling too much

I agree with this, but I think it's fairly clear Pritchard is the better player at this point (although Davidson has better hair, which I appreciate).

Honestly, with everyone clamoring for a trade to get a point guard, why not JD?

He averaged nearly 9 assists a game in G League, against less than 3 turnovers.  This in low 30 minutes. Last month of G League his assists per game went to 9.7.  He is definitely a pass first point guard. His shooting is getting better. He has shot nearly 80% from free throw line, so projects to get even better.  He is probably the best athlete on our squad, except JB, has good court vision, and really moves the pace of the ball, causing us to play fast.  Smart, and Brogdon, and especially Tatum, slow the pace down when they bring up to set plays.   We need to play faster, and more unselfishly.

Looking forward to his play in summer league.

I think for a team that is trying to get to the Finals and win a championship, handing the keys over to a second round pick the extent of whose experience is playing against G-Leaguers it might be too big a risk.

Thanks, this is sound.  Too soon for him to be given starter minutes, yes. But should be given more opportunity, off the bench, it will inject great energy into our team.  Hopefully can be part of rotation as the season develops.  He is a very skilled lob passer, probably got several assists to Kornet alone this way.  We have Rob and Zinger who are great dunkers on lobs.  The current players are pretty weak in that area; Smart was okay, but is gone.   He really looks to make the right play.  Like his upside a lot.

Not handing the keys over, not yet. But giving him the opportunity with reasonable minutes to develop into a rotation player this season.  Even if this mindset were to cost us a few regular season wins, who cares? Home court advantage is lost a lot of its value.

I am curious what level he is currently at. His TO/assist ratio is fantastic in the G league. I would love to see him get 10ish minutes to start the year. If he can't handle it you send him back down.

I knew he was fast, but I didn't understand what kind of athlete he is. I recently watched a compilation of G league highlights. The man can fly. Even if he can't orchestrate fast breaks, he has a place crashing from the wing. Unbelievable.

44.5-inch max vertical  that is getting up there.

If his outside shot get's closed to respectable, yes, I can see him as the third PG.

If not, NBA defense are good enough to make the open three shot to him as the open shot.

I'm all for this.  I think he can be as good as Scoot can be and have shown my numbers in other threads.

Realistically Brogdon is going to miss some time this year and it's going to leave an opportunity for JD if he's allowed to be on the team. I'd love to see him in that stretch -- enough to give him real run with the team, not enough that we're relying on him.
2023 Historical Draft: Toronto Raptors

Point Guard: Anfernee Hardaway, Fat Lever, Terrell Brandon
Shooting Guard: Paul Westphal, Paul Pressey
Small Forward: Marques Johnson, Danny Granger
Power Forward: Jermaine O'Neal, Bobby Jones, Kiki Vandeweghe
Center: Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka

We have rister spots plus there is now a 3rd two way player spot. I hope to see him playing  10-15 by feb.  Like it says above he is a great athlete. Hopefully he will show hi stuff in summer league and open his time in Boston.

You don't go with a project player at point guard for a team that is competing for a championship. There is no time to screw around with fringe players as the answer. Do that in rebuilding years.

Many a great leaper has not done well in the NBA but JD seems to have good floor instincts unlike Harold Miner.  JK
