Derrick White: It would be cool to get an extension with Celtics, I love it in Boston

On Tuesday, Derrick White appeared on ESPN’s “NBA Today”, donning a newly-shaved head that made headlines earlier in the week as he expressed excitement for the year ahead. He shared with Malika Andrews that he was excited for his new role as the team’s starting point guard (as confirmed by Joe Mazzula last month), and most notably, that he would like to sign an extension before the season starts, if the opportunity presents itself. “I love being here in Boston. It would be cool to get an extension,” White said. “We’ll see what happens during that window, but I’ve loved my time in Boston so far and my focus right now is just on the season.” – via Keith Pompey @ The Philadelphia Inquirer

Lock him up now with a reasonable price. If he plays like I think he will as starting point guard his price will only go up.

Small sample size but he won player of the week in Marcus smarts place last year. Don't think he will put up 26ppg like he did when smart was injured. BUT I expect he will excel in this role. in some ways better than Marcus. not because he's necessarily a better player. but because he knows his role on the team.

Kinda crazy that someone like Kelly oubre and Christian wood still remain unsigned. Guess the 20ppg they averages doesn't tell the whole story?

Might be just about the Benjamin's.  How much are they looking to score at this point?  Kelly is coming off a two year 24M dollar deal.  He might still be looking for that type, and maybe he deserves it, but the money dried up fast this offseason.

Is there a way we could get him for the GWill TPE in a S&T deal with Charlotte?

No. A sign and trade would hard cap us at the first apron, which we're already way over.

We could use a portion of the taxpayer's MLE, which would hard cap us at the 2nd apron, but I'm not sure that Brad is willing to get hard-capped
I'm bitter.

We can't acquire a player is S&T because that hard caps us at the first apron, a line we've already exceeded.

Not really.  To acquire a player in a sign-and-trade, you need to finish the trade below the first apron, at which you at subsequently hard-capped for the season.  The Celtics are currently $4.3 million above that line, so they’d have to shed a lot of salary for a move like that.

Thanks.  I enjoy learning more about the cap, because I just don't know a lot about it.

In the world of the new CBA, I wonder what a "reasonable price" is going to be.  You have to assume we will have Tatum and Brown at about 35% each.  That remaining 30% has to cover 12 other players, including Porzingis who will be in at $31M for the final year of his contract.  How much can you give a player like White and still have enough for the rest of the team?  He is worth more than Grant, or so it would seem.  His last year he will get $19.6M.  Can you really afford to pay him $20M+?

Well, not really, since we're going to continue operating as an over-the-cap team. Really we have the 30% left under the cap, plus another 30-35% over the cap until we hit the second apron (this amount will decrease slightly every year since the apron is a set $ amount above the tax line, not a consistent %). It actually works out pretty neatly to us needing to keep the combined salaries of our non-top 2 equal to Tatum+Brown's combined salaries. Porzingis making ~$30 million makes that hard, but not impossible, especially if we get a couple of decent late picks.
I'm bitter.

I understand.  Assuming Brogdon does not comeback.  But my point was more that it is not really about what White is worth.  It is more about how much of the remaining salary are you willing to commit to White in an extension now.  He may well be willing to add on a couple of years at say $20M.  He has certainly shown he is worth that.  But with what will be tied up with Tatum, Brown, Porzingis, and White, it makes it tough to work the rest of the roster.  I guess you hope the rookies you are picking now and moving forward, turn out to be useful players on cheap contracts.

Cool. The Ukrainian Sam Hauser.

Not sure if this has already been noted but choosing between the Celtics and Panathinaikos?  I am guessing it is more money in Greece, but he has already earned over $10M in his career.  The vet min contract is $2.165M for him I think.  What kind of money could Panathinaikos be offering?  Being Ukrainian, I guess Greece is closer to home but wouldn't the NBA be way better for him?

There's been some reports that those 2 guys could be waiting to see what happens with Lillard. If Miami gives up multiple rotation guys to get him, it could open up playing time on a contender.

Interesting, I guess it could go that way.  I suppose they figure they can always take a vet min right before the season starts.  I don't think Lillard is going to be traded before the start of the season at this point.  We'll see.

I kind of want to see some team go all in on signing these “just good” players that everybody is convinced the current CBA will undervalue.

The current model appears to be two expensive stars, a couple of cost-effective key roleplayers who fit well, and savvy bargain-bin signings to fill the rest of the roster.  You cap out and contend for a couple of seasons then reset to duck the worst of the penalties.

What if some team passed on paying $150M per year to two players and instead stuffed the roster with players in that $20-30M range?  Your best player might be a Derrick White or a Khris Middleton or a Deandre Ayton, but you have a pile of players at that general level of quality.  Does that get you anywhere as teams like the Celtics and Bucks bleed depth and fill out with second-rounders?

My guess is probably not, but I want to see somebody try.

There will be teams that take that route.  It will be teams that aren't able to sign legit max players.  It will be more of a plan B than a plan A.
