I kind of want to see some team go all in on signing these “just good” players that everybody is convinced the current CBA will undervalue.
The current model appears to be two expensive stars, a couple of cost-effective key roleplayers who fit well, and savvy bargain-bin signings to fill the rest of the roster. You cap out and contend for a couple of seasons then reset to duck the worst of the penalties.
What if some team passed on paying $150M per year to two players and instead stuffed the roster with players in that $20-30M range? Your best player might be a Derrick White or a Khris Middleton or a Deandre Ayton, but you have a pile of players at that general level of quality. Does that get you anywhere as teams like the Celtics and Bucks bleed depth and fill out with second-rounders?
My guess is probably not, but I want to see somebody try.
