I just don't know what you are referring to when you say that it represents the Celtics "cheaping out".
I meant we won't even take a look at Oubre and Wood and are trying to be cheap to meet our needs. Everyone there is real talent out there that we ignore for whatever reason. Offer one of these guys a chance to stay in the NBA and on a one year contract. Their talent is much more. I don't want to see MIA getting them if Portland gives in the Lilliard's demands.
I would use Justin C as a great example of another Celtics cheap out.
30 teams have had the chance to sign Oubre and Wood, and none have, but it’s the Celtics who are cheaping out? It couldn’t possibly be their leaguewide reputation of playing no defense, being difficult to coach, and, in the case of Oubre, taking every shot he can? If the Celtics sign either, fine, but my guess is they haven’t passed because of cheapness, but rather because they aren’t interested. Same as 29 other teams, including their most recent ones.
It is a bit of a mystery that Oubre and Wood have not signed anywhere. The music seems to have stopped and there are no chairs left. I suspect that these guys both view themselves as starters and expected decent contacts in situations with playing time. Now they have to consider the Celtics for bench roles on min contracts? I can't imagine either wants to be on the Celtics in that role.
But if we could land both of these guys somehow, our second unit would be pretty awesome:
Brogdon
Oubre
Hauser
Wood
Horford (assuming Williams starts)
I think both of these players could be good bench players on a contending team like the Celtics, even with their flaws or limitations. I don't think that is the issue. I suspect that it is the players that are waiting to see if somehow, a better, more lucrative offer comes along that is better than a bench role on a min contract. This isn't about the Celtics being cheap. All they can offer is a min contract. (I know, they can offer a little more with the MLE but that would hard cap them). I guess they could also use the Grant TPE and offer more (while still not being hard capped) but there is a very real opportunity cost with that.
Again, I see this more as Oubre or Wood not wanting to be 4th or lower at their position on the depth chart, as they would be on the Celtics. Oubre would be behind White, Brown, and Brogdon, Wood would be behind Porzingis, Williams, and Horford. I guess Wood could expect injuries to open up playing time.
