Just heard a good point that the NBA had confirmed that they would have looked at the 3 point line for Butler’s free throws whether or not Mazz had challenged, but they wouldn’t have added the .9 back on the clock if he hadn’t. And that saved the game.
Interesting. Has anyone here seen this reported officially? I was under the impression that the refs routinely looked at whether the shooting foul was on a two or three, and also looked at what time the foul occurred to adjust the clock. I didn't think that the coach's challenge would have any impact on either of those things.
I figured the coach made the challenge knowing that it was a three-point "shot," and hoping that the refs would find that the foul occurred before the shot, which would have resulted in only two free throws. If it also was the only way to get more than 2.1 on the clock, that made it an even better decision.
